Jose Mourinho looks set to quit Real Madrid at the end of the season – and Sir Alex Ferguson believes the Special One could be the man to succeed him at United.
The former Chelsea boss is reported to have fallen out with Real president Florentino Perez and last night wouldn’t discuss his future at the Bernabeu after Spanish paper Marca – which is close to Real Madrid – said this would be his last campaign at the club.
The news came as Ferguson – who is a great admirer of Mourinho – said he ‘could manage anywhere’ when asked whether the Portuguese might take over at Old Trafford when he retires.
Mourinho’s refusal to dismiss the reports, coupled with Ferguson’s comments, will only fuel speculation that the former Chelsea manager is in line to replace the 70-year-old at United.
Mourinho, who has also been linked with City and is also still in regular contact with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, has made no secret of his desire to return to England, revealing he feels he has unfinished business. He said: “In my career everything was perfect. The only thing I didn’t do, and I hope I can do it one day, is to win a Champions League with an English club.”
Given Ferguson’s standing at Old Trafford, it is likely he will be consulted before United name a successor.
Now Ferguson has appeared to open the door for a man who was considered an adversary during his time at Stamford Bridge.
“I would never think a guy who hasn’t played a game could be a top coach but then you’ve got to look at his personality,” said Ferguson.
“He’s got a marvellous, strong personality and that bridges that gap. When he comes into my office he can take a joke against himself, that is what I like about him.
“I give him a lot of stick and he laughs it off.”
