Elysium was pretty good. Not as good as District 9 though. The main antagonist was kinda irritating and the ending sequence could of done with and extra 10 or so minutes to pad it out a bit. Was an entertaining watch though.

Now You See Me:
Starts off well and is admittedly for the most part, a quick, fast, pacey thriller. It's a shame that the +1 twist ending basically renders it all so worthless. The talented cast is spread a bit too thin too, especially Melanie Laurent and Michael Caine who might as well not be there. Still, it's enjoyable enough.

The Wolverine:
After the downhill trajectory the whole X-Men franchises has been on since X-Men 3, I didn't expect much from this. Thankfully, it didn't fall into the gimmick overload of Origins and instead was a streamlined sidequest for Wolverine, which allowed it to be a more focused and engaging film. It didn't offer any insight into the character or do anything new for the series, but Wolverine's Day Out In Japan offered simple action/comic book/ninja movie thrills which were far more satisfying than the bloated mess of the previous three films. Apart from the giant robot thing at the end. Why does every film need a giant robot fight? It's the new bullet time.

The Conjuring:
Not as consistently shocky/creepy as James Wan's previous film, Insidious. It does seem to be more influenced by The Amityville Horror and The Excorcist, though. It's obviously nowhere near as accomplished as the latter, but there's more than enough here to raise it above the usual fodder and the intensity of the last act is tense, intensive and it has tension.

Insidious: Chapter 2:
Speaking of which........It's clearly a bit of a rush job to capitalise on the success of the first, as the often lazy script and certain cut-and-paste scenes show. Much like another not-so-guilty pleasure though, the Saw series, the diminishing returns are still of a higher quality than most mainstream horror. There are still enough solid ideas and standout scenes to escape the generic trappings and keep the interest.

Jake Gyllenhaal was awesome as usual.

Was the ending ambiguous? It was pretty clear tbf.

Yeah, gripping is the right word for it. The whole thing is incredibly downbeat and dour throughout, but the uneasiness created by the bleak atmosphere and not being sure of each characters' motivation keeps it on a knife-edge. It's a mostly straightforward crime thriller, but instead of a glossy or flashy overcoat, you get a murky one. It's that underlying, constant tension which elevates it to super quality. The best comparison would be that it's a meeting between David Fincher's two best films: Se7en and Zodiac.

Gyllenhall has quietly become one of the most reliable and consistent actors in recent years. In varying roles too. His underplaying was probably more effective than Jackman's snarling. Gyllenhall was basically in the Gilberto role, letting the other play (and cry and scream and hammer) while he keeps everything ticking over.

Anyway, one of the films of the year. Little bit Must Watch.

Marc Overmars
10-10-2013, 07:42 PM
Yeah it probably wasn't ambiguous, I was just over thinking it. You didn't really get to learn anything about Gyllenhaal's character, so I thought there might have been something shady about him. Shady to the point where the audience were supposed to wonder whether he left Jackman to die or not.

Captain Phillips:
Very similar to Greengrass' earlier United 93. There's a little drop-off in tension halfway through, but the final scenes are really powerful. A very solid, if not completely brilliant, (mostly) true-life thriller. Good performance from Mo Farah too and Hanks is always reliably excellent.

Thor: The Dark World:
Another really entertaining Marvel film for the most part. It doesn't feel as compact and slick as the first Thor, but it still has the right mix of spectacle, adventure, action and silliness. Some plot points seem rushed and sloppy and not fully exploited. The villain is a bit generic and almost peripheral. But Tom Hundredstone is great as Loki again, the focus on Asgard and the other realms gives it it's own identity and it all clicks together during the set-pieces and various showdowns and exchanges. Both post-credits sequences are interesting too.

Little bit belated response, but I must tell you, the hype was not lived up to.

Technically, it's an absolute masterwork. It looks and sounds stunning. But, that's all it was: a spectacular tech demo.

It doesn't have to be a work of great depth or even slightly profound, but the whole set-up is flimsier than Diaby's body. It's so thinly-written and often reliant on really cheap dramatic devices that it feels like the mega budget didn't run to more than two pages and one Biro worth of script. It's best viewed as a horror film, with space being the creepy evil thing. But even taken on those merits, it feels contrived and not a patch on the taut horror/thriller classics it's obviously borrowing from.

Worth watching for the spectacle at least. Although Space Station 3D at IMAX or one of those rides emulating a space experience for kids are probably better recommendations.

The Hunger Game: Catching Fire:
Really good. Starts off quite slowly, but when it kicks off, it's generally bigger and better than the first and doesn't let up until the final scene. The games and the characters are more interesting and although you could pick out obvious plot holes, it doesn't really matter when it's all played out with such confidence. A bit similar to The Empire Strikes Back in that it's clearly a middle section of a whole, but it sets up the coming finale perfectly.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug:
It's difficult to judge this new trilogy. It still retains much of what made the LOTR films magnificent, but it's always going to falter in comparison because the core story has been abused and therefore loses it's own identity and rhythm. It looks incredible, the soundtrack is as good as ever, the set-pieces (especially the Dwarves v Elves v Orcs battle on the river and the Smaug scenes) are still several tiers above the competition in scale and imagination, but it's a shame it feels so disjointed. The additional material is so obviously out of place that you suspect Peter Jackson must have done it for a bet because it makes little sense to drag the film down otherwise. The extending of unnecessary plotlines just takes away from the main characters. It should be about a hobbit and dwarves and a dragon, but they seem sidelined for much of the film. If you can overlook the fact that the characters and story have been diluted and just enjoy it as a succession of great action scenes, then it's still very impressive.

When I saw the first film I hadn't read the books - I didn't know they were books actually, I'd not heard of the series before a friend suggested we go see the film.
Really enjoyed the first film, got the books and have now read them. Now I've done that I can't help comparing the film to the book. Overall it was a pretty good adaptation and I did enjoy the 2nd film but while the first section - the lead up to the games - was very good it seemed to me they didn't leave enough time for the games section which in the book goes on for ages. In the film it felt a bit rushed.

Overall I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the 3rd one...oh, they're making that into two films aren't they? 3rd and 4th then.

I suppose the trouble with prequels is that you pretty much know who's going to survive, so it kind of takes a bit of the tension away from any big finales? What they did well in Days of Future Past though, is to make it less about who survives, and more about which way the main characters would go from a moral point of view - I thought that worked quite well.

Also, I'd like to think that the slight time travel element has given them licence to erase the atrocious third film from history!

Watched the Lord of the Rings over the last few days. Little doubt now, these are the best films ever made. There's nothing to fault in any of them and there are no other films in existence for which you could say the same, apart from possibly Johnny English.

The Edge of Tomorrow was really good. Surprising given its got tom cruise in it.
