The Bourne Legacy:

If it had no Bourne-branding, it would be a decent if unremarkable thriller. It doesn't have the same intensity and action of The Bourne Trilogy and you don't even learn much new in terms of the backstory. There's nothing particularly bad about it, but also nothing memorable, so it just seems an unnecessary use of the name. It was more like another Rachel Weisz film (Chain Reaction) about a man and woman on the run from the authorities, rather than a frenetic and brutal man-against-the-world action classic.

Looper:

Strangely, the time-travel plot is probably the least interesting aspect of Looper. Visually and set-piece wise, it doesn't stand out either. It's low budget seems obvious at times. It's quite slow to get going too. But it eventually turns into something unexpected. The character interactions are more interesting than the sci-fi elements. Some ideas could have been explored in more detail, but overall it's a quite excellent film and another impressive performance from Joseph Gordon Levitt.

Funnily enough, whilst i dont take him too seriously in the football, tennis etc threads as he knows little about them, i do take MS's view in this thread seriously.

Granted, he knows little about films also but then usually what films he says are shit are more often than not Must Watch films and vice versa

Dalton was a good Bond.

License To Kill, strangely, is more like a Craig Bond film.

Best Bond film ever? Probably Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice or Diamonds Are Forever because it was the funniest of Connery's run. Live And Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me, The Living Daylights and Goldeneye are top, top, top quality too. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is very good too, but Lazenby does seem like he won a Bond impersonator competition and landed a role in the film at times.

He said: ''I don't want to be the black James Bond. Sean Connery wasn't the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn't the blue-eyed James Bond, so if I played him, I don't want to be called the black James Bond.''

Wicked in 'The Wire' as Stringer Bell but was also good in 'Luther'. Was also good in 'Rocknrolla' and 'The Losers'. Good actor and fan of his work. But he'd be remembered as the black James Bond if it were to happen. Plus, not being funny, Bond is an international spy, culture clashes and prejudices still exist in certain parts of the world as seen recently. In London alone, he'd get stopped and searched for driving an Aston Martin. Lord knows what would happen to him over in Serbia.

Saw Prometheus. What a load of shite. A really poor quality rehash of a masterpiece. All the reality of the original was replaced with wooden incredulity. Alien is one of those films that should never have had any sequels or prequels. Alien 2 was bearable I suppose but then it got stupid.

Alien 2 was bearable I suppose but then it got stupid.

No such thing as Alien 2.

And you definitely said there was.

But yeah, Aliens was almost the antithesis of the cold, calculated, bleak stylishness of the first film. At least it was big dumb fun, but done extremely, extremely well. The others are pointless. Prometheus wasn't really a rehash, just a bit of a mess. It would have been better if they'd had the ambition to start a unique, new series rather than cheaply tie it to the Alien franchise. It wouldn't have made any money then I suppose. And Ridley Scott is a three/four-hit wonder, so it's not much of a surprise that it was a hollow spectacle.

It can't be worse than the last few I suppose. The potential is there when you have such a vast mythology. If they let a talented director take control and execute a singular vision (like Warner Bros. did with Christopher Nolan and New Line did with Peter Jackson), it could be something special. If it's a poorly-written, awlfully-directed, cheap-looking clusterfuck primarily being churned out to promote Burger King toys and other merchandise, it will be terrible. It's Star Wars, so the second is almost certain. Although Disney have mostly done right in terms of letting good filmmakers and writers work on the Marvel stuff.

Disney now have Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and well, Disney, under their roof. They are 1.9% away from domination.

Skyfall:

The first half of the film is really promising. Definitely the most confident, visually impressive and exciting of the Daniel Craig Bonds. Other positives are Javier Bardem's performance and the lighthearted touches that were missing from the last couple of films. Even through all this though, it still feels like these films have a lack of identity. By trying to be like Bourne, they lose what made them Bond. And now there's also the not-so-subtle spectre of Nolan's Batman films hanging over them. There are so many similarities in themes, characters and set-pieces to The Dark Knight and more strangely (seeing as they only released a few months apart) The Dark Knight Rises that it can't be coincidental. But it's not as fully realised and satisfying as either of those series. Bond should be Bond, not Bond Stars In An Inferior Tribute To Superior Films.

The worst thing however is the focus on M. Just because Judi Dench is Judi Dench, it shouldn't mean she sidelines the main attraction. Once again, by 'humanising' Bond, it takes a lot away from the mystery and aura of the character. On Her Majesty's Secret Service and License To Kill have been criticised for this in the past, so it's strange to see the Craig Bonds being praised almost universally.

Despite being the best thing in the film, Bardem also feels underused. As are Ralph Fiennes and Ben Wishaw as Q. When it eventually devolves into Home Alone vs The Expendables in the final act, it all adds up to another disappointment. A serviceable spy caper. Not a good Bond film.

There's loads of good actors (though not giving particularly good performances in this) in Excalibur who didn't become household names until much later. Neeson, Professor X, Gabriel Byrne, Ciaran Hinds (Dumbledore's brother) and Helen Mirren. Mirren was probably the most well-known. The guy who played Merlin died recently. :(

On December 12, 2001, Ryder was arrested on shoplifting charges in Beverly Hills, California. She was accused of stealing $5,500 worth of designer clothes and accessories at a Saks Fifth Avenue department store.[76][77][78] Los Angeles District Attorney Stephen Cooley produced a team of eight prosecutors. Cooley filed four felony charges against her.[79] Ryder hired noted celebrity defense attorney Mark Geragos. Negotiations for a plea bargain failed at the end of summer 2002.[80] As noted by Joel Mowbray from National Review, the prosecution was not ready to offer the actress what was given to 5,000 other defendants in similar cases, an open door to a no-contest plea on misdemeanor charges.[81] Ryder agreed under signature to pay two Civil Demands, as permitted under California's Statute for Civil Recovery for Shoplifting, from Saks Fifth Avenue that completely reimbursed Saks Fifth Avenue for the stolen and surrendered merchandise while detained in the Security Offices of the Saks Fifth Avenue store, and before she was read her Miranda rights and arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department.[82]

During the trial she was accused of using drugs, including oxycodone, diazepam and Vicodin (hydrocodone/APAP) without valid prescriptions. Ryder was convicted of grand theft,[83] shoplifting, and vandalism, but was acquitted on the third felony charge, burglary.[84] In December 2002, she was sentenced to three years' probation, 480 hours of community service, $3,700 in fines, $6,355 in restitution to the Saks Fifth Avenue store, and ordered to attend psychological and drug counseling.[85] After reviewing Ryder's probation report, Superior Court Judge Elden Fox noted that Ryder served 480 hours of community service and on June 18, 2004, the felonies were reduced to misdemeanors. Ryder remained on probation until December 2005.[86][87]

Yes.

It was already pushing it at two. There's nothing wrong with some slight additional material or embellishments, but to extend it to three films is quite absurd. They could have left that stuff for the extended editions or a future money-spinning sequel/prequel.

I await the four-part, 12-hour The Very Hungry Caterpillar adaptation.

I'm looking for something underrated preferably, something that normally wouldn't really take my fancy.

LITERALLY anything?

Some weird/offbeat/lesser-known shit for you to little bit sample:

If you want to keep it recent try Drive, The Raid, A Prophet (French film) or either version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

For films Mental Charlie would be proud to star in, try anything by David Cronenberg (The Fly, Dead Ringers, A History Of Violence and Eastern Promises being perhaps the easier to comprehend). If you haven't seen them, most of Kubrick's films from Dr. Strangelove onwards (2001, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining) were slightly insane. If you've seen Oldboy, Chan-wook Park's other work is pretty good too, especially Thirst, which is one of the more original takes on vampirism.

You seem to like animated films, so Tim Burton's Corpse Bride is an obvious recommendation. Most of Hayao Miyazaki's work is brilliant, so if you're interested, try Castle In The Sky or Princess Mononoke first. The English dubs are #decent sometimes, but can be #awkward also.

Oh, you asked for two recommendations. You can probably get most DVDs for about £3 now anyway.

Nah, it just isn't very good. It's like a parody of an action film. Hot Shots Part Deux was better.
