Ajax centre-back Jan Vertonghen has signalled his desire to join Arsenal this summer.
The highly-rated Belgian has just one year to run on his contract and Ajax are expected to demand a fee in the region of £10million for his services.
Arsene Wenger is a keen admirer of the 24-year-old defender with Tottenham and Newcastle also interested.
Vertonghen, who is a close friend of Thomas Vermaelen, was at the Emirates for Arsenal's Champions League tie against AC Milan earlier this month.
'Arsenal are a magnificent club and I hear a lot of good things about English football,' Vertonghen said.
'If a club of Arsenal's calibre can reach agreement with Ajax, then I will gladly go over.
'I have instructed my agent carefully. 'He knows which clubs I want to join, and Arsenal are one of them.'
Vertonghen added: 'I haven't signed anything with them yet.
'But I went to watch them against Milan, together with my Ajax teammate Siem de Jong, after Vermaelen invited us. We had a few days off and profited from them.'

Pub Teamer can fuck off
Need to get Podolski asap
Oh
Our defenders are forming their own tapping-up network.
Koscielny will do his work on Giroud next.
according to colgne press, podolski deal will be announced officaly tomorrow
Do we need another centre back? I can't see the point of this Ajax dude.
But even in midfield we have:
Rosicky, Walcott, Gervinho, Ramsey, Jack, Arteta, Song, Ox, Diaby.
Other than strikers we have fucking loads of players. The only way Wenger can improve our midfield/defence is paying massive bucks for 'super quality' players and I can't see him doing that.
It'll be an interesting summer to see what he does because we certainly don't need bodies (other than up front).
We deffo need a midfielder in the Nasri mould as Jack will replace Cesc. Benni will go back to chavs which frees up room for a Gotze/Hazard to come in. If we get rid or The dross, Ashavin, Nicky B, Johan, Squid, Chamakh, Diaby, Denilson and a few more, we should have room to bring in quality.
So mancini was scouting out Hazard last night according to ssn.
looks like he'll be a citeh player in the summer then.
