As long as Wilshere doesn't start we're all good.
Flamini and Arteta are both well below the standard we need for that position.
Both have their limitations, Flamini running about like a maniac can have its benefits but ultimately it's still going to leave us with a big gap in midfield if we don't select the right people around and he's more than likely to get himself suspended. It's why I think Gibbs is the better option in the bigger games, he has the recovery pace that Monreal does not.
They both have glaring weaknesses, definitely. Would anyone take Song back?
Flamini was getting a lot of praise earlier on in the season, not convinced he's ever been good enough, couldn't get a game at Milan and they were happy to let him leave which says a lot given Milan's level these days.
Generally you get what you pay for on the whole, he was free.
Ha!! Lest we forget all his defensive problems. Even with our current issues we're definitely better right now than with him - you just need to look at the table.
Anyway, the good thing is that in our pursuit of a DM a the start of the window last summer it does seem that Wenger is looking to fix this. Need to go all out for Lars Bender again.
Flamini would be the butt of all jokes on here if he played for another team. Limited player and a scrote to cap it off.
Arteta is as a great man once said, a snail. He's not a natural in this position and it shows by how often he's overrun, he doesn't have the pace to compensate either.
We have the dosh now, I want a top quality striker, pacey winger and CM in the summer. #footballmanager
Throw in a Rightback (Sagna looks off and Jenks isn't good enough) and another central defender (to replace TV5 who looks off and who can keep BFG & Kos on their toes).
Quite a few positions we need to fill up.
To sum up:
Out: One of Flamini or Arteta (don't think there's room for two reserve DM's), Sagna, TV5, Podolski
In: Pacy technical winger/runner, DM, CB, RB & world class striker.
I'm not asking for much. :coffee:
Flamini definitely adds more steel and protection to the back 4 which is what you want from your DM. He throws himself about, is physically stronger and puts in the tackles that need to be made. He's a natural DM and you can tell. Perhaps if he had a side parting and shouted less he'd be appreciated more seeing as a small minority seem to like the obedient, professional look that Arteta brings. Maybe it's because this look fits in with the whole 'Arsenal are a classy team' BS.
Arteta when put under pressure is crap, he doesn't make the tackles required, and spends half his time chasing shadows. He's good against the shit teams because we can control possession and his 2 yard, sideways passes are fine. But he can't mix it with the big boys and is utter toilet when we play them.
Sign a CM/DM in the summer, get rid of Arteta and have Flamini as back up. But for now, Flamini should be first choice all day.
Flamini is alright but I don't like that mole on his nose, he has enough money why not get it removed?
I don't think the DM position is a serious problem for the time being. We can certainly do better but Arteta and Flamini have come under more scrutiny because of Ramsey's absence and Wilshere's inclusion in the middle.
Ramsey was putting up silly numbers, like 7 tackles per game! That's incredible. A three man combo of Arteta, Wilshere and Ozil struggle to notch up those numbers between them. Wilshere has yet to make a tackle since coming back from that short lay off. He's made one unsuccessful attempt Liverpool and there was nothing against United. If you look over his last 5 starts, we're talking 1 tackle a game. That's not good enough if you're playing in the middle. Ozil gets stick and looks very slight but he's not as bad as Wilshere on the tackles. It's surprising and shocking because Wilshere appears to be busy.
I think Wenger needs to have a word with Wilshere and maybe stick Rosicky in the middle or give Ox some more games. Ozil also needs to get in on the defensive work. It's not all down to the DM's and they're suffering because Ramsey is injured.
Totally agree.
If we really want to push on and become a dominant team domestically and in Europe then we need to sign a top quality Defensive Midfielder and a top quality Striker.
I personally hope Wenger goes back in for Lars Bender as the DM signing, the boy looks a real talent.
Can we sign this guy and quietly swap him with Luis?

:haha: at his pic with Sturridge
I agree with those saying we need a proper DCM. Arteta and Flamini are decent against the bottom 10 but for us to push on to the next level we need a real specialist in there; somebody who can pass it quickly, has strength, defensive nous, able to read the game, wins a freekick when he gets robbed of the ball, doesnt hide etc.
Iùd sign Bender and Snachez in the summer.
Santi got out of his sickbed and was in training today.
Flamini would have been powerless to stop the shambles occurring witnessed the other day....and possibly wound up to the brink of walking....
The backline were worse than anything Arteta did that day. We have taken it easy on them, which I think is right to an extent as they have served us well this season....but the high line was our death warrant, so I would be reluctant to put too much of that on Arteta, even with his limitations.
I like the idea of Bender though....a positionally sound, hard working player who distributes the ball well like Arteta and doesn't panic under pressure of passing the ball out when closed down quickly.
Far too often on this board we put the ability to counter attack effectively quickly simply down to pace, but it is far more sophisticated than that imo. Against United, RvP sprung our offside trap to perfection, because he was placed perfectly and timed his run expertly.... only to pass it to Sneezy whilst pirouetting on his chocolate leg and hitting the deck. RvP is no speed demon. The best counter attacking players are usually nimble and dexterous but moreover their first positions are canny and their timing is deadly.
I would like to see Gnabry brought back in and be instructed to play off the shoulder of the opposition's backline when we are comfortably in possession and when the danger of losing the ball does not mean we're going to concede. I think he is intelligent enough to discern the difference accordingly.
Barcelona also typically play in a tight nit subuteo type matrix so they can play short and quick passes to each other..... The difference is, that in the background you can see one guy making a darting run which will be picked out immediately by the guy on the ball. Far too often we will play the short passes but the 1/2 runners simply won't be there....so we simply keep passing it until we gain even more territorial advantage by which point the oppositions defence lines are organised, set and right in front of their goal.
Match day,
:scarf:
Nervous for it now, first goal is vital.
Game over. Wengers chucked it lads. Apparently he's fielding crud. Sanogo to start.
It's best we take risks and try different players in this game. We need someone from the bench to step up and get into the first team.
Is there the risk that podolski might play?
Wouldn't want that tbh, he might score :sulk:
