When it w...yeah think we'll leave that. Good luck to em.

Arshavin is an example of badly managed player IMO. 4-4-2 with Arshavin behind RVP/Bendtner/Adeisawhore would be devastating IMO, at least on paper. :coffee:

FOOTBALL
Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner has undergone an operation on the fractured wrist he suffered playing for loan side Juventus on Saturday.

Bendtner, 25, picked up the injury in the final minutes of the Italian champions' 3-2 defeat at Sampdoria.

The Danish international has failed to score in his 11 games for Juventus. Talking about the result, head coach Antonio Conte said: "It's a pity only for the 100th injury of Bendtner, who has really had an unlucky season."

Oh, how we've missed him

....Arteta started out as a trainee with FC Barcelona but could not break his way into the first team and was eventually loaned to Paris Saint-Germain in the French league. He was then signed by Scottish Premier League club Rangers with whom he would win the domestic treble of the league, Scottish Cup and League Cup in the season of 2002–03. After success in Scotland, Arteta moved back to Spain to play for Real Sociedad but failed to establish himself within the first team and was loaned to Everton for the remainder of the 2004–05 season, prior to signing permanently in July 2005. He then made a permanent transfer to Arsenal in 2011. He was appointed vice-captain of the club in August 2012.

Arteta has represented Spain at under-21 level, but he has not played for the senior national team....

We need to address the balance in our midfield. Arteta is part of the problem. We haven't got enough players that are comfortable controlling the ball in tight spaces and under pressure. The intricate passing moves are long gone and we’re not a team that can create a load of chances and dominate possession like we used to.

Come on guys, Arteta deserves to be treated with a lot more respect on here. I do think we need someone better, someone more dynamic capable of offering us a more threatening & dominating presence in midfield but it's not like Arteta has had an incredibly poor season or hasn't given his best throughout for the team.

He's not in the same category as players like Gervinho, Diaby, Squillachi, Denilson, Chamkah etc etc who deserve to be ridiculed.

Niall_Quinn

If we're going for top quality this summer then I agree, Arteta has to make way. Get the chequebook out then and splash the cash. We'll need £30-£50mill plus another £20mill wages for a striker to replace RvC. Let's say £25mill plus £10-£15mill wages for a top quality midfielder and another wad for a top defender. £100-£150mill all in should do it.

Back in the real world Arteta will remain a key figure for us. We'll probably bring some prospects and second raters in this summer. If we get lucky I suppose we might find something in the bin that provides an alternative, doubt it though.

opta broke down the stats for chances created, drilled down to those 'most likely to score' meaning one-on-ones or situations where it is pretty much expected to really test the keeper and we were up there with the rest in the league. (this was from xmas but it gives an indication, especially as we won more games in the second half of the season).

http://thefootballfront.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/clear-cut-chances-and-premier-league.html

but you are right about the midfield balance and arteta, who has done a 'job' for us but is an area we have to upgrade.

Just read back over a few pages - why on earth is Arteta being categorised as 'pointless' - has this forum gone even more crazy. Last season we didn't win a game without him in our midfield and this season he's had a similar impact...really..people have some weird judgements on here. Hey Mac, did I finish ahead of you in the fantasy footie...I think I did...a respectable 4th/CL qualifier! ;)

But towards the end, he gave up aswell, and was content to bloating out of shape on his salary.

Power n Glory
05-06-2013, 08:51 PM
We could have made better use of his talent. We should have just played him behind the striker. He'd have scored and got plenty of assists. Wenger can be so inflexible with certain players. He'll give a player like Gervinho a shot to play as striker even though he has shown no sign of being clinical when playing for us and he'll play Ramsey as a winger when he has no dribbling skills. I don't understand it.

The fat Russian hasn't really helped the cause but Wenger can sometimes miss a trick. It took him years to play Rosicky in the middle and I've always wanted to see him play with Cesc there but he never once tried it. Now that Rosicky is slowing down and having to watch the mileage clock, he's getting games in the middle. If he's able to acknowledge the fact that Rosicky is getting old and can't keep chasing up and down the flanks in great bursts, how comes he can't see the same with Arshavin? Besides the fitness, (it improved as time passed) he can't bloody defend. Instead of freezing him out we should have played him as the attacking midfield player instead. Would have saved us money and helped the squad.

Marc Overmars
05-06-2013, 09:45 PM
In terms of pure talent he was easily amongst the best in the squad, however his attitude and general persona was one of someone who was just content and couldn't care less whether he was still at Zenit or Arsenal.

Never got the impression he had much of a drive and hunger within himself, plus with a manager who is not known for his motivational ability it's not surprising he flopped in the end.

Easy to see why he spent so long at Zenit before making a move - he was in his comfort zone.

Ronaldinho won everything there was to win and just took his foot off the gas. That's more understandable. I'm pretty sure he's still better than a chunk of midfield players out there now and could do a job. Just not a world class job like before where he was on another planet. Torres is a useless striker at the moment and terrible on all levels. You can't work with a player when he's so off form.

Torres had a decent goals record last season, albeit most came in Cup competitions and were largely unimportant. He did contribute to the Europa League run as well.

He's not become an absolute shell of a footballer like Arshavin though. He's not a striker anymore, he's completely lost his pace and sharpness in key areas. But, he actually links up pretty well and as a slightly less violent version of Kevin Davies, he's not doing too badly. The price tag and the general 'let's laugh at megamoney megaflop Torres' mindset (which I am fully behind) have made it so that everything he does will be painted negatively. But in actual footballing terms, to say he's fallen to the level of Arshavin is simply wrong. Arshavin was beyond a liability. Truly shocking. Unless he was playing in a knees-up with Reading.

I disagree with that. Arshavin's form is nowhere near as bad as Torres. Arshavin is lacking match fitness but give him a run in the team and he'd still get goals and assist. It's more of a fitness and match practice problem.Torres bottles chances and misses sitters and he hasn't got that sort of excuse because he gets regular games.

Master Splinter
06-06-2013, 10:18 PM
Arshavin was struggling to make two-yard passes and had become more disastrous than Eboooooe. This was long before he was frozen out and was nothing to do with his starting position. He had that one good half for Russia at the Euros last year, then did nothing for the next few games. That's an encapsulation of his career. Zenit fans observed this on his move to Arsenal. He was dropped from his national team too for not giving a fuck and hasn't played since. Torres has not dropped to those levels at all. At the very least, he puts in a decent shift.

This

Was excellent in the Euros for 2 and a half games proving he could still do it.

You missed a few opposite opportunities. Here, I'll do them for you:

He showed he was the best at making two yard passes

Zenit fans said he was quality and they were right

He still plays for Russia because his form was and is awesome

Giroud haz no movement and iz an ugly fuck and Arteta is shit and Kos has had 30 minutes of good form ever

Q: Is Wenger averse to spending £25m on a single player? Is there an idealogical narrative going on from him here? Doesn't he prefer developing players?

IG: "No. There is no idealogical narrative at stake here. The idealogical narrative is we want to have the best possible players, the best possible team and compete for trophies and Arsene will do what he thinks is right to do that. There is no philosophical line in the sand and I suspect that he would pay £25m for Lionel Messi."

one thing that has come out of tonights meeting with gazidas is how he/the board want the blame on wenger. by throwing him under a bus by saying we had funds for last 8 years then admitting tonight htat he has been working on a limited budget is shocking, but wenger has never moaned. then this time, they keep saying we do have funds and if we dont spend them then its all wengers fault.

they seem to want to make him the fall guy again, i read on twitter someone saying they felt this was because gazidas doesnt feel in charge and wants to be so is undermiming wenger. an interesting theory, and with things like this its one that makes sense (i dont believe it myself) but it doesnt sit well with me how the board shift blame away from themsleves onto wenger with the spending, with or without money

He has been complicit in most of this too, Oli.

Though I don't think he deserves the lack of respect he has been subjected to, he has had enough at his disposal to do better than he has.

His teams comprising Fabregas, Nasri, RVP etc etc have, on a few occassions, had the chance to win silverware, but for the lack of spending a few quid more, and addressing unbelievably niave/arrogant/pigheaded tactical and motivational issues within his squads.

Money is a big part, yes, but nobody else told him to buy Chamakh, or trust in the fitness of Diaby, or persist with the shitness of a few players.

I do think however, that he is one of the best managers in the world, and that we as fans of Arsenal have been spoiled by the awesome nature of previous teams. Teams which Wenger very much deserves the credit for building.

It is also clear that he has had quite strict financial constraints, so what he has managed is pretty amazing. And at least we have a club with a massive new stadium, and the "potential" to move onwards and upwards, under our own steam, and watch on while Spurs try and build a stadium and stay in the top....was going to say four....

Great post, agree with it all.

Wenger has undoubtedly been working under tough conditions, and is better than given credit for by some.

But no way is he blameless for some of the crap decisions made over last few years.

hmmm smashing the transfer record in january 09 to sign arshavin. wasting money on young players. giving bumper renewals to deadwood like djourou. where was the financial restriction in that? if he wanted more money they would have given it to him. i think as arseblog put it a couple of months ago its a case of 'theres more money available so if you want it you can have it'. wenger being the stubborn man he is didnt want it. and if he was on a budget then its much worse as his decision making on funds has been terrible.

'we've always made the money we generate available to him to spend.. but what arsene has done well is stay in the mix on a relatively little budget'

that tells me 2 things. 1) if wenger wanted more money they would have given it to him 2) there has been a budget, which i dont think anyone has doubted.

If we can manage to win some trophies, and lets face it, we need to strengthen the squad massively, then the past near-decade or so can be considered a blip to create a stadium like this.
