Chelsea fans are REALLY annoyed about the Luiz transfer.

Spuds are also close to a Dybala deal according to Ornstein.
Pretty good business from them really if they get him on top of Ndombele and Lo Celso.

got to say i am pleased - i think that's a really good price - i know he fucks up sometimes but we know that from the outset and hopefully it might even be funny if he does it when we're 4-0 up with 5 minutes to go

Fucking useless doesn’t start with an “a”.
Play Luiz in midfield, he's very decent in there, he's useless at defending though so if we intent to play him at CB we're in trouble, always remember that calamitous 7-0 defeat he captained (I think) in the World Cup semis, he's a player who is more attacking than defensive, not a great trait for a CB.
He's cheap I guess and as mentioned in midfield he's good, I'd happily ditch Xhaka and put him in there with Sokratis and Holding or Mavropanos.

I think the most sensible way of judging a player is by looking at a one off really bad result they were involved in.

Paulo Dybala and Giovani lo Celso are going to be very exciting for Tottenham fans. It's been a drought for them over the last few transfer windows but thankfully the club have come through and delivered, off the back of the Champions League final.
It shows they're about to take that next step, in terms of their development, and if someone like Dybala comes to the club, along with Lo Celso, I think it solidifies their top-four aspirations and gives them a better opportunity to chase the top two for longer this season

we have bought a lot of players this summer... very unusual.... will time to integrate. Not convinced on Luiz, and its a sad state that he is being signed to push Mustafi down the pecking order as opposed to being a top defender. He might work. Think its good that we have the barcodes up first as they are in there usual mess and never normally start a season well.

I don't actually think Luiz is anything as bad as his rep suggests (normally keep that to myself such is his rep) and tend to subscribe to Barry Glenning's theory that player's with large barnets get a leeettle bit more attention around their mistakes.
Sit him next to a no nonsense shout at his own shadow kinda dude like Sokratis and maybe he will cost us much less than Mustafi will inevitably do.

Honestly don't understand why we didn't take the 35 million, would have been a nice bit extra to the transfer kitty. We don't really need him with the players we have, this is probably another Wilshere where we don't take the money when we can get it and he ends up leaving on a free after failing to make an impact.

I had a bery good ebening at this fantastic restaurant. This is a restaurant with great ambishion and we have to enjoy each moment. The owner is a berry good player for us and will help us reach to the top 4.
Decent business this transfer window at long last.
Happy with the signings overall, got some decent players in but also importantly got rid of substandard players like Iwobi, Jenkinson, Koscielny (error prone) etc.
Only shame is that Mustafi and Xhaka are still here.
Getting rid of Iwobi was good business, we probably made back about 60 million overall, so we haven't invested that much, which should leave some money to bring in more quality going forward.
Would have been good to have tried to get a longer term CB with the Iwobi money, but I guess we ran out of time.

Last season behind Auba and Laca, Ramsey and Iwobi were our two best attacking players and the only ones who could plausibly get better.
I would have preferred to keep Iwobi (at least till January) and see how he paired up with Pepe on the other wing. We probably would have been able to sell him for the same amount in January if we had waited as age is still well on his side.
Anyway the manager is making his bold decisions and I hope their will be no excuses made by anyone for him once this season starts.
Marc Overmars
08-08-2019, 06:23 PM
His decision making is poor and he's been around long enough now to make his mark, which he hasn't been able to do.
Ultimately, the money is just too good for a player like Iwobi. It was a one time deal and we took it and in the position we're in financially, I'm ok with that.

Thinking about the Luiz signing it’s a good short term replacement for Kos. Our defence has been terrible for at least the past decade and Kos has been at the heart of that. While he’s been one of the better ones, we can’t say he didn’t have a fair few mistakes in him. Luiz can do the same but we’re getting someone who knows the league inside out, is experienced, won a lot of medals and doesn’t hide in games.
Very happy window.

Only a few years ago people were laughing at City paying £45m for De Bruyne, or Bernardo Silva, or us paying £35m for Mane. You've got clubs like West Ham, Palace and Wolves readily able to spend this amount, Newcastle spending £40m on someone who scored about 7 goals last year. Figures above £50m used to be the preserve of the greatest names in the world (i.e. Madrid), now it seems to be more surprising when a fee involving a big club is less than £60m. The numbers don't really mean anything, they're not connected in any way to reality.

Breath of fresh air at last, for years we signed next to nothing or nobodies and kept hold of underperforming players, we finally seem to have shifted our policy and are getting rid of players who aren't performing and filling positions we need.
Pretty happy with this window, would have loved a top CB, but maybe we can do that in January or next summer with the money we recouped.

So many fans near suicide at the start of the summer and an almost complete reversal now.
We’ve spent about £300m in the past 3/4 years (not including this summer) but it’s all about how the money has been used. Raul seems to be old school - using contacts and getting shit done. Edu is probably of the same mindset, as in South America it’s all about networking and not just what’s on a database.
We are still way off challenging but as long as Emery delivers - and these players live up to their potential - we are moving in the right direction again.
You’re right. It’s about how the money has been used in this window.

think the luiz signing was a bit kneejerk but we did need a new centre back and he shouldn't take time to settle as he knows the league, he knows London. so should be able to hit the ground running and for £8m relatively low on the gamble front.
the club have done well, and I am actually looking forward to the season, anything lower than 4th would be disappointing though. As think United bit of a shambles still and Chelsea totally unproven manager and going to rely on the kids and no Hazard. So if we don't get at least 4th Emery should get sacked.
only downside is the obvious Mustafi, Mikhi and Ozil still being around and no proper back up right back.

a pretty good summary.
i'm hoping Luiz might mature at our club, cut out the mad forays forward and be a solid CB- but we'll just have to see.
one thing's for sure, Sokratis will not defer to him and if luiz fucks up he'll know about it

You're hoping a 32 year old coming to a club who have a history of not being able to defend properly will mature at the club....really? If so you're in for disappointment, our best hope is that he doesn't have too many of those lapses of concentration he's well known for, or that he plays in midfield where he's very good and mistakes like that can be covered.
Sokratis makes enough mistakes himself, I doubt he'll be shouting at a player of Luiz's experience to be honest.
Personally I'd prefer him to play at CB in an emergency and give Holding/Mavropanos a chance when fit and then move Luiz into Xhakas' position where he'll really improve the team.

His relationship with Luiz will either be really cordial or a disaster. Strikes me as a total personality clash.
Anyways we were near anybody but Mustafi territory and Luiz who has played for Chelsea, PSG and now us is not Mustafi.

Personally I'd prefer him to play at CB in an emergency and give Holding/Mavropanos a chance when fit and then move Luiz into Xhakas' position where he'll really improve the team.
i do agree with that, but i'd still sooner see him in CB than Mustafi, though that's setting the bar pretty much as low as it can be.
I totally get people's scepticism re Luiz, I just have an instinct it might work out - maybe as you say as defensive midfeilder - if he pushes Xhaka out of the starting lineup that's got to be a good thing
luiz for captain...?

Not sure how much Luiz will directly improve the overall standard of our defending? Maybe a little, but probably not a great deal. My main hopes for his arrival are the indirect benefits...
1) It pushes Mustafi out of the side...
2) It might even push Xhaka out of the side (if Luiz can offer us that same range of passing, but from the back line, then what does Xhaka really add to the side?)...
3) If we can bench Xhaka more often, then we can start selecting more dynamic, more press-resistant CMs to play in front of the defence (Ceballos, Willock, Torreira, Douzi)...
All of which will hopefully mean less hospital passes being made and less forced errors being made in and around the defence.
(I'm also hoping we'll see some indirect defensive improvement from the changes in shape and system we can now work with, now we have wingers and a few defenders who can play in a back 4.)

I think the Luiz signing is the only bit of business I'm really 100% comfortable with. I rate him and think he's at a higher level than almost all our defenders, but TBH thats not saying much seeing our back line is easily one of the worst in the whole division.
Like Zim said, his well deserved reputation for losing concentration should worry us but I like the way he's always confident in his ability (something he actually does have) and I'm hoping it rubs off on some of our younger players who can actually get better. Though I can't convincingly say our defence will get better with him in it, I can however say I don't see him making it worse than it already is.
I think the singing makes sense as it attempts to address our weakness and most will agree he is better than what we have.

I’ll say this for Emery - whilst I’m not 100% convinced by him as a coach, I do think he knows what he’s about when it comes to squad-building. Raul and co obviously need to take a lot of the credit for the execution of the deals this summer, but Emery’s been pretty much spot on when it comes to his assessment of what the team needs and who needs to be moved on. And the problem-players that we haven’t been able to shift are being frozen out and told to find new clubs! A very good summer’s work.
The only remaining annoyance is the blind spot he has when it comes to Xhaka, but hopefully that doesn’t mean that Xhaka is immune from being edged out of the side by better players, as the younger CMs start to mature around him.

Emery might be able to identify what is needed but he certainly isn't able to put together the team correctly. His team selection and tactics this season have been extremely questionable and I really do question whether he is able to even improve us behind a "maybe good enough for top 4" type team.
We have a fairly decent squad now, a nice blend of youth and experience. We only really have a couple of positions to fill in the first XI to put the strength of our starting XI undisputedly behind Liverpool and Man City.
The money is there, Emery seems to be able to identify where the squad / team needs improving...yet our performances are no better than last season.
It's on Emery now...he's gone past the honeymoon period and I for one will only judge him on a performance and results only basis from now on.
Moreover he seems to have caused a major issue in Central Midfield with his rigid stance on Xhaka and Guendouzi being first choice picks irrespective of form. Guendouzi right now is a shoe-in for the first XI but Xhaka.....come on?

Talk is Newcastle will take him on a short term deal if we pay some of his wages, I'm not even sure people will pay 10-15 million for this guy, if we can convince him to leave on a free I'd be happy, we gave him a new contract not long ago which was a weird decision.

That's great if he goes, but i'd be amazed if any English club would take him given he's marked himself out as a trouble maker - although having said that, clubs still sign nutters like Joey Barton so clearly i'm just too naive...
Look, Xhaka isn’t good enough for us if we want to be challenging for titles.
However, you can’t just say he’s not good enough to play elite football.
He’s obviously got some talents....he’s Swiss captain for fucks sake.
No he’s not for us. He doesn’t fit in. But lower level teams would happily take him. In a more structured environment, he’d probably look better anyway.
Right now, there is zero structure to the team. Nobody knows where they’re supposed to be playing, or what they’re supposed to be doing. Xhaka for all the wrong things he has done, isn’t any worse than half of the rest of the squad. The fact nobody is in a place to show their talents in this team is all down to the pathetic manager.
Good that we’re offloading. But better the manager goes too.

You can't blame everything on the manager though when he has this squad of losers to work with. Xhaka has been garbage under two managers and can't even get the basics right, that's nothing to do with the manager or the tactics.
That said I think Xhaka would be decent at a bottom half PL club that packs everyone behind the ball. But we'd be lucky to get £20m for him.

I'd take 20p just to get him off the books and out of our club
