I honestly remember the poor League form and the Cups equally, but I would say a large part of this perception is down to how god awful the FA Cup final was. It was a real war of attrition and I can't imagine anyone without an emotional investment in either us or Wednesday staying with it right to the final whistle.

Clearly, I was happy with the Cup wins, but the memories of the dirge we watched remained. That said, I wouldn't trade those wins for a slightly better league position!

Strangely enough, I am reading about just this very period in Merson's book, 'How Not to be a Professional Footballer'.

The mod thing? Nothing to read into that.

It sounds like how the memories of this season will turn out to be. I guess the only saving grace is the next season you won a European trophy and finished 4th..... if that isn't desperate I don't know what is.

Two cups back then was a big deal, that's what sticks in my mind from that season. Two cups now? For a big club those are consolation prizes, the importance has waned.

He is still a hero at Liverpool, so hopefully they will keep him on a few more seasons - should give us less competition for CL spots in the PL.
