Are we under the impression that Manchester United have never bought the title in the past?

Not so overtly and when they have spent big it is at least with money they've earned through previous success. They haven't just had some billionaire take over when they were in mid-table and spend, spend, spend until the won the title.
It's sickening that clubs are allowed to operate like this. It is NOT showing ambition.
