Mertesacker was generally very good, as evidenced by us being far more panicky in his absence. Like Arteta, he kept things calm for most of the time and executed the simple things well. He has been missed. He senses and cuts out danger before it occurs rather than allowing himself to be sucked into unnecessary, heroic last-ditch challenges.
