True, but id guess he want to manage at the highest level. It could take a while before pool get back in the Cl and he may not want to be just another statistic tbh.

there was a good piece written by david conn in the guardian today talking about the changes off the field and the work needed to restructure off the pitch. martinez fits their bill in many ways; a football philosophy, premier experience, young, as you say a great image and perhaps more importantly, happy to work on revised budgets which must surely be the case after last summer.

this season was probably a short, sharp shock to the americans who thought they could just repair their handling of hodgson quite simply with a club legend, and away they go. their baseball side is not faring too well at the moment and a dose of reality in the prem may have forced them work on a slower plan back into the top 4, which given 2-3 seasons, could be achieved by martinez. whether the fans would get on board with that is another thing.

sib - true, he hasn't been hired yet but it's hard to see him saying no and usually the first approached quite publicly tends to go all the way.

LIVERPOOL legend John Barnes has called for the FA to introduce a SACKING window!

Barnes reckons his idea would ease the pressure on under-fire bosses during the football season.

His call comes a day after the Reds sacked Kenny Dalglish following their dismal eighth-place finish in the Premier League.

Barnes said: “I’d like to advocate a sacking window.

“If there’s a transfer window, there should be a sacking window.

“If you hire a manager, you shouldn’t be able to sack him for a year.

"That will mean the fans will support the manager, instead of booing them after two months when things aren’t going well.

“If you don’t boo them, who knows what can be achieved?

“We don’t know what would have happened if Andre Villas-Boas had stayed at Chelsea, or if Roy Hodgson had stayed at Liverpool.

“I still believe it is the wrong decision to have knee-jerk reactions and sack managers."

Dalglish was axed after just 16-months into his second spell in charge at Anfield — despite leading the club to Carling Cup success this season.

The Scot also led the Reds to the FA Cup final but it was not enough to convince the club's American owners to hand him another season.

And Barnes, who was axed as Tranmere boss in 2009 after less than four months in charge, reckons Dalglish should have been given more time.

He said: “Kenny was not given long enough. Managers have to be given time.

"If Manchester United had sacked Alex Ferguson after two years of failure, where would they be now?

“A year is not enough for any manager.”

Dalglish came under fire for splashing almost £100million on expensive stars including Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson — who have all failed to impress on Merseyside so far.

But Barnes warned whoever succeeds Dalglish in the Anfield hot seat to forget about having anything like that transfer kitty.

He added: “I don’t think the owners are going to say here’s another £100m to spend after the previous outlay.

“Regarding the new man, you can look at Roberto Martinez or Brendan Rodgers who have proved they have the right philosophy on how football should be played and are progressive managers.

“If Rafa Benitez comes back, I would support that.

“Looking at the Liverpool squad, you will see a marked improvement, whoever comes in.”

    Barnes

He wants a sacking window so a manager cant be sacked til after a year. Kenny was in charge for 16 months...

Then he goes and says a year isnt enough for a manager then why have the sacking window?
