the best thing the club could have done would have been to make sure we were not in that position in the first place. that is where they fucked up.

How? By selling him a year earlier (when he wouldn't have been anywhere near as sought after because it was before he had last year's amazing season)?
The only alternative to that is to get the player to sign a new contract which is entirely in the player's hands. And for the same reason as above why would we have offered him a big new contract after all his injuries?

At the time that wouldn't have seemed like such a stupid idea given his injury record but because of that record we wouldn't have got as much for him and we wouldn't have finished top 4. We'd already sold Nasri and Fabregas, unless he'd been replaced with a serious signings (and we all know he wouldn't have been) we'd have been stuffed without him last year.

well, if we are placing monetary value, as per the arsenal board, over integrity of the club, then sure, we should've kept him for that reason.

if we go back in history to any point and replace somebody with 'another' would events pan out exactly the same or would things be different? there is absolutely no way of knowing what would've happened last season if rvp wasn't here and somebody else was. the dynamics would've completely changed.

the club fucked up. it's ok to admit it.

You mean give a crooked player a contract for another 3 years? No one knew he'd have the season he had so it would have been dumb too then. In hindsight its a diffrent matter.

Precisely. These hindsighters always have something that the club could have done differently, but selling RVP when he originally chose not to sign would almost certainly have realised less than it did selling him once he had had his outstanding season and showed he could keep fit for most of it. Keeping him saved CL football for this season.

Fans have to realise that its player power that rules these days, for those most sought after.

Pretty much not 1 club can say player power does not rule.
