MANCHESTER UNITED have revealed that discussions are under way over who will eventually replace Alex Ferguson.
Fergie will be 71 on New Year’s Eve and vice-chairman Ed Woodward confirmed the club are preparing for the day when the legendary Scot finally hangs up his hairdryer.
But their plans are locked away inside Old Trafford.
Woodward said: “We have a view as to what type of manager we want and how and when we’ll go about it.
“But it’s in the drawer and long may it stay in the drawer.”
Ferguson said earlier this year: “I don’t think another two or three years would harm me.”
But Woodward’s comments will come as a surprise to the United boss who has never been asked for thoughts on who his successor should be.
Speaking in February, Fergie said: “Never discussed it — it is a dangerous game.”
Woodward also claimed that United will not be sold by the Glazer family for “many, many years.”
The Glazers are still under fire from fans over the amount of money borrowed to buy the club in 2005.
United were forced to spend £31million this year just paying off interest on the loans.
But Woodward said: “The excitement they have in this club is undiminished and I don’t see them selling for many, many years.”
