All the 'we can compete shite' is just that. Gazidis is an incompetent fool. Incapable of closing a deal, and selling the vision (which we don't have). Other clubs just go for players, show ambition, and sign them up. Heck Swansea look more attractive, and sign players. This close season is panning out as expected, cue the half decent type start, followed by apocalyptic collapse come January. Yay us!
