Businessmen don't look at sport that way. They'll see 4th place as huge, worth millions. So when Wenger says we can still compete with the squad we have he may be saying we can still get 4th and get the millions. And with the sponsorship deals flowing and the money piling up what's not to love if you are an investor who got in relatively cheap and has a desperate buyer lined up and waiting? Not spending still gets them what they want.

They have Moyes. That was always going to kill them.

To be fair even Chelsea have only been able to spend modestly by their standards....a dutch prospect from Vitesse Arnheim, Mark Schwarzer on a free and Andre Schurle who was already in the pipeline before Mourinho came back.
Man City are the only club that have been able to strengthen and that's because they have been willing to spend the same silly money on players that PSG and Monaco are.
How even in this day and age is a 28 year old from Shatkah Donetsk worth anywhere near 30million?

And look at Spurs?....Paulinho who could be good, could be rubbish....cost them near on 20million and Nacer Chadli who is a Belgian squad player.....truth is the market has become so inflated by these super rich clubs that it is pricing everyone out. Don't get me wrong i think Wenger and the club have been weak with their transfer negotiations and seem not to be going for it with any conviction. I think the board knows this current squad is going to be challenged for a top 4 berth season in, season out......so you'd think even if 4th was the sum of their ambition they'd be happy to invest more to make sure of it.....rather than taking a money saving risk option when we know that at heart they are cautious in the extreme.

Just saying, the goals of rich people differ dramatically from the goals of poor people.

There are no excuses, I don't give a f*ck what BS they come out with, there's no excuses. You have plenty of time to plan and can if you choose to try and get these deals completed early on, we've dragged our feet and it's almost August an f*ck all has been signed.

It's not down to anything but poor planning and incompetence and greed, we can't keep listening to this BS every summer.

All i'm saying is that if their goal was purely money (and not to say it isn't) you'd be more likely to tap into wide wide revenue as well as corporate sponsorship by being in a position to challenge not only for 4th place but for trophies as well, and by creating name recognition brand in the squad who play for us.
I think the board are largely incompitent leaving most of the day to day running to people like Ivan Gazidis (with all the spam e-mails, would you trust your money with a Nigerian Bank?) and Wenger who has more power at the club than any other manager has at their respective clubs. Wenger is a prevaricator, on one hand he knows that even the hard core faithful of fans are not happy with the current situation (and even with revenue from other avenues, it won't look good for the club's image to have half empty stadium on match days which is what it will come to if this trend continues) on the other hand he is loathe to spend money because he believes football and the transfer market is a false economy.....as well as knowing that if he does spend money and is unable to produce silverware his protective vaneer is gone.
