It’s not even over the last decade, just look as far back as last year. It’s crazy to think we’re in this situation where we had a world class striker on our hands and all he wanted was for us to show some ambition in the transfer window. Now we’re looking to spend £40m plus wages on Suarez! All of this could have been avoided and it’s so short sighted.

Suarez wants CL footie so he can put himself in the shop window for Madrid. Look at what has happened with Bale on the strength of one freak game in Europe. We'd be paying £50mill to be used as a stepping stone, so the deal makes no sense at all for us. That's why I immediately knew it was a phantom transfer done more for PR purposes than anything else.

In pure football terms Suarez is perfect for us, we've needed a bit of craft up front ever since Iscariot left and Suarez has bags of that added to his goalscoring abilities. I can't think of a better option. But we're his second choice, he brings all that baggage, we won't be able to build a team around him because he'll piss off in record time and signing him might simply turn us from a selling club into a taxi to Spain in the eyes of all the greedy mercenary players out there today. But the biggest negative (apart from the fact this deal isn't even happening) is we blow everything on one player and go into the season with a weak squad in all the other positions.

We're weak in goal. Still very flimsy at the back, seriously Gibbs will be injured half the season and an injury to either Kos or Merts (neither as great as people are making out but stable at least) and we're done. Sagna will get murdered in the middle by the more powerful strikers btw, he's not an option. Arteta is still being layed out of position, Jack may or may not spend most of the season on the treatment table, Gervinho is off and Walcott is horribly inconsistent, Podolski is hot and cold. We have Cazorla to rely on and that's about it guys. For various reasons we are weak or potentially weak everywhere else. If this is not addressed then there's no getting out of it, the blame falls on the manager fair and square.

But anyway, the whole Suarez thing was a ruse. Either a ruse to avoid spending money at all or to keep the fans and other clubs distracted while we chase our real targets (I hope FFS - surely?) We should have bought Higuain, he wanted to come here by all accounts so we may not have had to pay the £31mill. We blew that and it seems we blew it deliberately. We could have got Higuain and plugged some other holes.

Well based on what NQ says, from a financial point of view the Suarez deal makes perfect sense.

Buy for £50m then sell to Real for £100m next summer!

£50m profit for a years investment, very tidy. The board and kronke will be pleased.

More likely buy for £50 million and sell for 25 million in 2 years time when there's 2 years left on his contract and he's decided it's time to go (and noone else is interested).

That's another thing, if Suarez comes he won't move on next summer, there's no chance of that this means he has to be willing to put his career on hold for at least 2 years, can't see it myself, he doesn't need a stepping stone club everyone knows who he is.

Of course he could go after a year, players can do what they want these days if the are prepared to kick up enough fuss. I don't see Suarez as having a problem with creating a fuss, that seems to be his default.

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger says the Gunners are working hard to sign Luis Suarez from Liverpool and is hoping an "amicable" deal can be done between the two clubs.

The striker, who finished the season as the league’s second highest scorer last season, has been subject of a bid from the North London club worth £42 million as exclusively revealed by Goal last month.

“I don’t want to speak about Suárez because that’s between Liverpool and Arsenal,” Wenger told reporters ahead of their Emirates Cup action.

“We will completely respect what Liverpool want to do [and] we want to do that in an amicable way if it’s feasible."

“I’m a great believer that you have to keep as much confidentiality as possible and that is quite difficult in the modern world.

“We work very hard not only on the case you named [Suárez] but other different cases.”

Must have been a bonus question on the Hangout.

    In any case, WUMger.

    Transfer muppetry is on!

Congrats to Arsenal for being so confidential that not even the faintest hint of a activity has been detected.

If the latest reports are anything to go by I am getting the impression Arsene is geniunely happy with the squad.

There are a couple of positives, I'm taking from things so far....

    i) I think AOC is going to have a big role this year, and I see him changing our fortunes to a degree
    ii)

    Actually. One positive.

    Based purely on hope.

It's better to burn out, than to fade away.
