To be fair the market genuinely is difficult in January. But something has happened this summer, it would have been impossible to listen to another round of excuses in January otherwise. I don't think the fee is expensive at all, when a player like that comes up and somehow city and utd and the chavs don't get first bite then you have to act if you are in a position to do so and have any ambition at all. You can't let a player like that sail past especially as Wenger has wanted to sign him for a while. So it probably wasn't planned but it was an unmissable opportunity when it presented itself.
There's also a suggestion we were set to hand over a pile of cash to HMRC if we didn't get rid of the money elsewhere, not sure if that's true but if it is it's even sweeter, getting a great player as well as denying the thieving government pigs. Pissed off the spuds, turned Levy from a hero to a bitter little troll rushing around trying to scupper our plans and failing, made Utd look cheap, piled more pressure on Moyes, pissed of Madrid and divided their fans, poured cold water on Bale's unveiling, made Martin Samuel and his media buddies cry.
This deal absolutely had to be done, it was as if the stars aligned in a once in a lifetime pattern. Although it's twice for us now because we had Dennis Bergkamp too!
