To be fair the market genuinely is difficult in January. But something has happened this summer, it would have been impossible to listen to another round of excuses in January otherwise. I don't think the fee is expensive at all, when a player like that comes up and somehow city and utd and the chavs don't get first bite then you have to act if you are in a position to do so and have any ambition at all. You can't let a player like that sail past especially as Wenger has wanted to sign him for a while. So it probably wasn't planned but it was an unmissable opportunity when it presented itself.

There's also a suggestion we were set to hand over a pile of cash to HMRC if we didn't get rid of the money elsewhere, not sure if that's true but if it is it's even sweeter, getting a great player as well as denying the thieving government pigs. Pissed off the spuds, turned Levy from a hero to a bitter little troll rushing around trying to scupper our plans and failing, made Utd look cheap, piled more pressure on Moyes, pissed of Madrid and divided their fans, poured cold water on Bale's unveiling, made Martin Samuel and his media buddies cry.

This deal absolutely had to be done, it was as if the stars aligned in a once in a lifetime pattern. Although it's twice for us now because we had Dennis Bergkamp too!

    Precisely correct.

So many priceless things rolled into one.

Wenger's comment about sometimes having to pay over the odds suggests he at least didn't think the price was inexpensive. Old habits will die hard I suspect.

Obviously we all hope this is new start, signing Ozil was hard, keeping hold of him will be harder if we don't keep investing.
Players like this don't stick around in second tier teams.

He's a level above most of the players in the team, so hopefully they all raise their game now. He'll be gone in a few seasons if we repeat what's gone on recently.

it's quite amazing what one real display of intent has done to the supporters belief.

what has been forgotten is the fact this is wenger's last year of his contract, which many - and perhaps growing into most in recent months - and hoped would be his last.

so the question is where does this leave the contract from both the directors point of view and the supporters? and wenger himself?

Don't know where you got that from? Can't recall anyone saying that.

Yeah a bit out of the blue, that. Fans have always been behind the manager.

Is this the last year of Wenger's contract?
If you don’t send this signature to ten people, you will become a Spurs fan.

I have no doubt he will sign a new contract... Especially after signing Özil, and Özil saying that Wenger convinced him with his plans about him.
