Won the Champions League? Runners up in the UEFA Cup? Won the Bundesliga last season along with two other times in the period you mention. Plus they are one of the best supported clubs in Europe.

I'll re-quote this because it's insane. Borussia Dortmund's supporters are amazingly vocal. Games against German sides are rarely, if ever as tame as you make out.
I have been to watch Dortmund before and their stadium is electric. 10 Euros a ticket for standing, cheap beer on the go, all makes for a great atmosphere. It's basically what England was like in the 80's, only without the brain dead neanderthals ruining it for everyone.
