If he thinks it will help them take points of his rivals and doesn't see a place for him in his team, it's actually quite clever.
I agree but Mourinho only thinks short term. Given they can't directly affect him anymore he probably thinks he's devised some cunning plan to affect his rivals.
What does he do next season? Ask for a bye against them?
If he sells him to Man U clearly he feels his team will be more than good enough to deal with Mata, especially as he'd know him pretty well.
