The reports are saying over 40 million which is a lot of money. Ozil money in fact. I know they don't need it, but turning it down makes Mata a very expensive bench player.
To be honest, Manure are just going to spend 40 million on some other top midfielder if not Mata in the summer. In fact they may well sign Mata for a huge fee and still make 1 or 2 further massive signings in the summer.

If it were anyone else but Mourinho, the Chelsea fans would be up in arms with the prospect of this transfer. As it is they'll no doubt lap it up. Hopefully it's just Jose playing a massive trick on everyone, and he'll sell him to us.

Mourinho is Mourinho, it never worked for him at Real Madrid because the club was too big for him to treat as his own personal fiefdom. It was known from the time that he took over that Mata wasn't his type of player...and to be honest we have too many players similar to Mata to make a bid for him worth while.
I don't really understand why Moyes didn't go for the spaniard in the summer, but to be fair he is totally useless and his record at Everton has been massaged to make him look more competent than he actually is.
The real question is WTF are city up to? 37mill would be cheap for a bench player by their lack of standards. Do they not realise somebody else will get Mata if they don't bid?

The only hope is that Mourinho is just trolling Utd as punishment for Rooney last summer, making them ignore all other targets and concentrate all their resources on Mata only to pull the rug at the 11th hour leaving Utd without anyone. He's the sort of guy that would do that.
I doubt it though. Even after their win on Sunday he was so slavish about them (they didn't deserve to be 2 - 0 down) , speaking about them in a manner that you'll never hear him when talking about us.Maybe he still holds some faint hopes of getting that job?
