Rooney isn't worth half that in sane terms but the inflation caused by the money no object model forces other clubs to meet outrageous demands if they want to keep their team together. The comedy clubs have placed all the power in the players' hands because it's no skin of their noses if wages demands are ludicrous. Unless FFP is actually applied of course and there are a few signs it might be. Then you'll see the wages coming down. This is a last hurrah for the greedy with a bit of luck.
You’re glossing over the points. As far as I’m aware, we offered him a new deal over the summer when he was in his last year and it was for 60k. If that’s true, that’s not even a wage increase because his last deal was 60k. That has nothing to do with other clubs or inflation.

You're saying we've let his contract run down without doing anything about it. Not true. We put an offer on the table. The player rejected it. We went low, he has gone high, that's how it works isn't it? I think he'll settle for around £90K too. I still think that's way too much for a 31 year old FB but it's what the club thinks that matters.

On one hand youve got wenger on £160k a week which is ok because he has made money in player sales and getting top 4 every year and on the other hand youve got a greedy rooney on £250k who makes the club a fortune in merchandise ,shirt sales and endorsments .He has also helped the club win a champions league ,the premiership 5 times, fifa world club and league cup twice since we last won anything..

Rooney hasnt done shit, Ferguson did all that as you can see this year. Which kind of proves the point you're trying to argue against

To be fair, Wenger has got to that wage after nearly 2 decades at the same club - if Chelsea or City ever held on to a manager for that long then I dread to think what wages they'd be demanding!

An offer on the table for the same wages he’s been on since signing speaks volumes. They’ve purposely left it to the last minute because you can see how we conduct business with younger players like Wilshere and Ramsey. If your employer gave each of your colleagues a massive wage increase but only offers you a contract extension for the same money even though you’ve been one of the top performers for years, what would you think? If the club want to lowball then Sagna is within his rights to reject a deal and look elsewhere. The club just have to ask how much his contribution to the team is worth and just like our transfer dealings, this is where Wenger gets his valuation all wrong. Priorities are backwards. Why break up the one thing that has kept us in this title race?

As far as I see it , the writing is on the wall for all to see. If the club (Wenger) wanted Sagna to stay then they wouldn't have offered him the same wages as his last contract which in essence is less, given inflation. I can only see that Wenger thinks he can do better either by pushing an incapable Jenkinson, too early or buying cheaper elsewhere. I still can't understand the concept of the manager getting paid more than the players. That is like the chief engineer getting paid more than the drivers in an FI team. The longevity argument also doesn't wash as Fergus on never got paid more than his stars even though we can easily see he contributed as much if not more than them

This is not a defence of Sagna but I can see it from his point of view when sideways Arteta is on 80 and all he does is huff about the place. He would be better off elsewhere, Tragedy is he will likely be replaced by someone much inferior. I can't see Wenger paying the 20 it will take to get Coleman from Everton

Share Tweet +1 Email The 28-year-old insists he is happy at the Vicente Calderon, adding that there is "no better club than Atletico"

Gonzalo Arroyo Moreno No regrets: Juanfran turned down the Gunners Juanfran, the Atletico Madrid defender, says he rejected a lucrative offer from Arsenal over the summer.

The 28-year-old has confirmed that Arsene Wenger was keen to bring him to the Premier League, as we reported in August.

But the right-back insists he is happy at his current club, despite seemingly having the opportunity to increase his wages.

And with four years left on his contract at the Vicente Calderon, the Spanish international doesn't appear likely to make a move to the Emirates or elsewhere soon.

"It is true that I had an offer from Arsenal that any player would have liked to have accepted," Juanfran said to www.marca.com.

"But I am very happy here.

"For me, as everyone knows, there is no better club than Atletico."

Juanfran has scored three goals in 94 appearances since joining from Osasuna in January 2011
