Do you think they were Van Gaal signings or club signings though? We know they were after Herrera last summer, and I think Shaw was on their shopping list a long time before they decided to ditch Moyes, so I'd be surprised if van Gaal had much to do here, other than to decide whether to veto the moves or not?

For me, what this proves more than anything is that we shouldn't even need the manager to be around in order to get deals done - I mean if Man U can be signing players while they don't even have one, then surely we should be able to get deals done, if our manager goes for a swim or a stroll on the beach?

Yep I categorically agree and GlobalGunner has put it in perfect words above. It's pretty well documented by now how much power Wenger has at the club and over transfer policy. Which is why most people are within their rights to be agitated at him being kooked up doing punditry in Brazil rather than focused on doing the deals to get the squad ready for a title challenge next year. Poor bugger could enjoy his holiday in peace if that wasn't the case.

Ideally you'd want a scenario where Wenger and Gazidis sit down and draw up a list of targets before the window begins and it's then left entirely up to Gazidis to obtain said targets with his and only his discretion being used as the chief executive to decide how much resources should be devoted.

The thing is that this seems to be what used to happen when Dein was around but in the vacuum of his departure Wenger took up more responsibility and seems to not want to relinquish it ever since then.

Another Reus situation. He's too well coveted for us to even stand a chance of him. Not that I mind us showing this sort of ambition but if there's an inkling he's available a Barca/Madrid + Petro club would be all over him. Juventus ain't going to sell so it's a moot point in any regard.
