There's no universally agreed definition of what a country is but the borders are always artificially defined (well, unless it's an island nation) and borders change over time, sometimes not that long ago.

Carles Puigdemont has said he'll delivery on the referendum results, that is to say confirming Catalona will look to become an independent state.
No idea what this means for Barcelona, Espanyol and Girona in the future.
The Spanish State has always been receptive to secession so I am sure all will be fine.
