I've only watched snippets unfold on SSN so I don't know the ins and outs either. I think there was alleged money being passed under the table which allowed Qatar to get 2022, an email and a picture of several wads of cash emerged. 2 senior FIFA guys were suspened because of it and one of the guys suspended was supposed to be running for president.

The FA also wanted the election postponed so Blatter could have an opponent rather than being elected by default, an entirely reasonable suggestion. Here is the response they got:

Fifa senior vice-president Julio Grondona also delivered a stinging riposte to the English FA.

"We always have attacks from England which are mostly lies with the support of journalism which is more busy lying than telling the truth," said the Argentine. "This upsets and disturbs the Fifa family.

"It looks like England is always complaining so please I say will you leave the Fifa family alone, and when you speak, speak with truth."

Their suggestion got 15 votes but needed over 150 out of 208 to go through.

Breaking news: FIFA under investigation for corruption!!!! The holier-than-thou organisation has shocked the world with allegations of bribery within its membership. FIFA are currently voting for to elect a new President in a secret ballot. Early reports suggest its a very close one-man race, the result could go either way...

It was more like showering money from the top floor like confetti than passing it under the table. Apparently the delegates were all called to a hotel room and handed the cash, everyone knew what was happening. Also, the reports say most accepted the money. You reach a point where the corruption is so blatant you either do something about it (which the national associations won't) or just accept it. Lots of noises are being made but nobody has done anything other than beg FIFA to have a shred of self-respect and practise their corruption covertly. Does anyone think they'd count the ballots properly even if another candidate stood for election?

They couldn't even cover up the Qatar-sham properly either. They thought that in the second round dropping the number of votes for them down to 9 from the original ballot's 10 would be enough to throw us off the scent.. Nice try.
