Two-time grand slam champion Marat Safin has announced he is running for government office in his native Russia.
Former world No. 1 Safin, who retired from the sport in 2009, played his first match on the ATP Champions Tour on Thursday as he beat Wayne Ferreira 6-2 6-3 in China - and then revealed his plans to move into politics.
The 31-year-old is running in December's elections for the 450 seats in the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian Federal Assembly.
"I am running for Federal Parliament in Russia," Safin said. "The elections are on December 4 so I will find out soon.
"It's a new challenge. I think I am an intelligent guy and I have a lot to bring and a lot of ideas about things and what to do. I am very committed to it."
Since retiring from competitive action Safin has worked closely with the Russian Tennis Federation and the Russian Olympic Committee, giving him some experience he hopes will stand him in good stead.
He added: "I could be the best looking guy in the Duma, but that's only because all the other guys are over 60."
Safinstill a nutter.

Kvitova v Azarenka in the WTA Championships final today.
Wozniacki is already confirmed as the world number one for this year, although she only won one out of three here. Sharapova had a chance to get the top ranking, but she lost her first two matches, then pulled out with an injury. Whoever wins today will be number two.
Kvitova and Azarenka have been the form players recently and Kvitova has won all her matches here so far. If she wins today on top of her Wimbledon title, she's clearly the best woman at the moment.
So basically:
Women's tennis.
Women's rankings.
Kvitova.
Kvitova took the first set 7-5.
She was 5-1 up at one point.
"I really like Arsenal. Do you really like Arsenal, or only Arsenal with trophies?" - Dennis Bergkamp.
"Which Arsenal do they want back, the one Arsene created?" - Tony Adams.
Azarenka takes the second set 6-4.
Come on Kivtova
