    2004, 2006 and 2012 too.

Not much you can do if your brains just turn to mush as you can’t train for the pressure of the situation. Just have to hope one day we break through that glass ceiling.

southgate took off players who were much more experienced - i was thinking this morning that had he still been on the pitch, Walker would be a good candidate to take a pel, but he was subbed for Sancho

southgate basically played for pels from the moment Italy scored

and his case that he picked the best players on pels in training ignores the fact that it's very different in a major final - he should have chosen experience

he's taken us a long way but can he win us anything? - i suspect not - he doesn't know how to grab a game and win it

Weren't you all cooing about what a great job Southgate was doing a few days ago? In this thread? His teams are shit and have always been shit. They play shit and then laughably refer to it as football. That's why I stopped watching it because it's unwatchable. Like every other so-called football team out there today. England has only "improved" because football has fallen to their level. Doesn't matter who you watch, it's the same comatose patter ball. No wonder the Italians won it, that's their speciality. Another useless team that is perfectly suited to the modern drudgery that has replaced football.

I think he got most things right during the tournament but last night was definitely the worst performance collectively and some decisions were a bit strange too. I think we just froze and the occasion got the better of us, managing the pressure and having a strong mentality is basically the difference between winners and losers. That’s why these other countries produce serial winners and we don’t.

Has to be seen as progress though and we should certainly be aiming to win the World Cup. Getting to the latter stages doesn’t mean anything now we’ve done it a couple of times.

Scotland was a much worse performance. I actually don't think the performance was bad last night. Italy are the best side we've faced and sure, they were the better team but it was a stress free first half and while they equalised and there were a few scares they weren't battering us.
It's easy to blame Southgate for bringing on two players to take penalties who then both missed () but had they both scored everyone would be hailing him as a genius, and on another night they might well have.
Overall it was a good tournament for us and we do look like a proper team now. It's just disheartening with another "oh so near".
1990, 1996, 1998...and now 2021. It does "wear you down through the years".
It's the closest we've come in my lifetime and with home advantage it feels like an opportunity missed.

It's a massive opportunity missed and i wouldn't be surpised if we bombed in the next WC - think about how easy our last two competitions have been in terms of the opposition we faced - we surely can't be that lucky again... ?

I know I'll probably sound defeatist and wise after the fact, but have we really actually gotten any better?

In this tournament and 2018 we've beaten who we'd be expected to beat and been beaten by the team's we probably expected not to. We beat Germany fair enough, but it's the worst Germany team in a generation and you could argue we should have beaten Croatia. But frankly it doesn't really feel any different to every other tourney, when we come up against anyone half decent we shit ourselves.

The performances have generally been diabolical, the football mediocre and we supposedly have the most exciting and best crop of players in years. Though I don't quite agree with NQ in saying everyone is absolute shit, it's hard to argue that international football does seem to be in something of a lull now in that there isn't one team head and shoulders above everyone else and every team has big weaknesses or problems to exploit.

We had a chance this time round we will probably never have again, playing on home soil with other teams flying here, there and everywhere, and we didn't take advantage. And with them nob head fans last night, will we even get the opportunity to host again any time soon?

    I think we've improved.

Our game management is a lot better, the way we held the ball against Denmark and didn't panic. Even last night, we didn't get overrun. Italy were probably the best team in the tournament - they haven't lost for 30-something games - and we took them the distance. Italy dominated the second half but they weren't hammering us. There were a few scares but they didn't calve us open. At times we do look like a proper team, our passing and movement are good.

But...being at home, it was our best chance since '96 to win a tournament, we went one step further this time but didn't win it. And yeah, with the morons I doubt we'll get to host one again any time soon. So I suspect we won't win anything for the foreseeable.

Game management is a buzz term that was suddenly introduced by the media around two years ago. It was rarely discussed before that. And if the "improvement" in a competitive sport means not being overrun then no wonder you've improved because it was impossible to get worse.

Just Like Arsenal. England wont improve unless they get a better manager. Southgate wouldnt last a season at any of the top 8 PL clubs, yet is at the highest profile job in the UK. Keep deluding yourselves. A manager who doesnt have the nerve to substitute Kane even for 20 mins is a dunce, Brings on Rhinos like Henderson as soon as he has a slimmest of leads is just a survivalist. You had the easiest side of the draw, home advantage almost all the way and yet.

"You couldnt live with your failure, so your failure brought you back to me......I am inevitable" Thanos or Nemesis in the case of England
