He had already been touted as the best player in the world though that had boiled down a bit, but we were still signing a player from the top,top, top, top, top, top tier of football. Hard to compare with today because footballers are much more about marketing than football now. So Ronaldo would be bigger by a long way, in terms of shirt sales, sunglasses sales, Vaseline sales. But as a landmark moment for Arsenal I doubt the signing of Bergkamp will ever be topped.
