Hardly a risk.
Now, lets say that OX has an injury free year & takes the Prem by storm which is a possibility - could have a silly Spanish offer or a Gypo offer for 60-70 mill within a few years.
Ozil for £47 mill was more of a risk than £30 mill for Shaw, another couple of poor seasons for him & we'll struggle to get half our money back.
Why are we talking about buying to sell? Isn't that the sort of thing we're tired of seeing at our club? Also, if we're talking about Wenger mismanaging young players, why would we want to see him spend more on them? Finally, the English premium only applies to the Premier League. Bale was a one off. He's the only superstar British player to leave the Prem in the last 10 years. We'd have to go as far back as Owen and Beckham's move to Madrid unless you want to count Joe Cole, Joey Barton and Defoe. It's usually the top 4 clubs paying silly fees for the lower league teams as well. It's rare to top 4 clubs selling each other their English players at a massive fee. If Shaw somehow flops, there is nowhere else for him to go but down and United won't recoup that money. See Liverpool and Andy Carroll. Ozil is no way more of a risk than Shaw. We could easily sell him back to another major club in Europe if things don't work out for him here.

Van Gaal has been occupied with coaching another side which is more time consuming than punditry yet his new club have pulled of two expensive deals already. And now that half of the teams have been eliminated it should increase the odds of signing someone. Really, unless the player in question is still playing at the world cup and is integral to their first team, there's no reason not to be capable of concluding deals right now.

I heard this on the Arsecast extra the other day but I thought it would also be good to get opinions here. At what date/point will you guys start to officially panic?

I can see the more sensible posters are trying to be more restrained and trying to give the benefit of the doubt to Wenger/Gazidis but eventually there has to be a point, no? I remember last year I got a bit of stick on here for allegedly panicing too early when we were dithering about as usual in the market. I think it was when Liverpool looked to have signed Mkhythrian (actually ended up at Dortmund) and we as usual were bumbling about ........ obviously I was later proved correct with how horrific it ended up.

For me if we haven't wrapped up at least one major deal by the end of July I'd start bricking it. We've got a challenging opening run of games and there needs to be time for whatever signing we make to be embedded into the squad and to acclimatise to both the country (assuming he's foreign) and the club. I think any signing after this point won't fully be ready for the first PL game of the season which is why it's imperative it's done by then.
I am already panicking but its the same story every season, so that makes it easier to digest. We know that till we have Vinegar as manager, things will be going down the same way.. Experienced players leaving, best players leaving, waiting period, panic/bargain basement buying.
Arsene Wenger, the only football manager that got paid 8 million quid to do nothing but sit on his arse..

I don't think you said much wrong in your post but I'm just a bit uneasy with the suggestion that United have a better strategy than ours. We can't afford to do what they do.
Depends on how you rate Shaw I guess, but agree with that. They can take more risks, and I think, for example, Herrera is a bigger risk. Our strategy should be to take in the more established players but that in itself offers a big risk too.

We can't hope an Ozil falls into our lap every summer. We'll hope for Real Madrid to try to sign Suarez in order to free up Benzema, but it could leave us empty handed. Meanwhile instead of waiting for Southampton to have made £60m in transfer fees, we could've bought Schneiderlin quite early for slightly over the odds, and sorted one of our problem areas.

I hate to make the comparison, but I can't help feeling Shaw could very easily become more of a winger in a few years, in the same vein as Bale.

As for Lallana. I think he's a decent player, he'll fit into our style quite nicely but I just can't get excited about him. The money is neither here nor there, welcome to the Barclays Premier League. This summer I want a marquee signing though. Especially when/if Suarez goes. We're back in the CL, it was meant to open doors previously shut to us last summer. Well fucking prove it and sign somebody decent, not another 2/3 bargain basement shithouses like Aspas and Moses.

Also, fair play to Wenger. Looks pretty decent for 60-whatever.

One of the Sky Sports drones says we may be after Lovren should Vermaelen go.

Poor old Southampton won't have a team left at this rate.

Their requirements are different to us - so that aspect of our strategy (no more youngsters) should be different. Where their strategy is vastly different and superior to ours is that once they've identified who they want, they pay what it takes and they get him in with good time to prepare for the coming season.

It is our unwillingness to do the latter that has the fans laying mushroom clouds.

Would anyone consider paying 100 quid for a lottery ticket if they knew it had 50% chance of coming in? Of course they would. Shaw's fee is huge, no doubt but I really don't see him being a complete flop. The risk is offset by the fact you don't have to worry he will adapt to a new league and country. And I don't even rate him as much as half of you lot.

I don't think you should do it with every signing....but there comes a point where you identify the man for you, show some Cojones and put your money down on the table. Fortunately left back is about the only position we don't need a recruit in...doh!

We'll preparing the fax asking for a time extension after the World Cup has ended, the wanting and waiting periods are over and the impossible until Suarez moves period has concluded. So there's nothing to worry about.
