I do think we could and should spend more, I don't hold access to our accounts so can't claim to have more knowledge than anybody else but I do find it strange that a club of our size which generates millions every single season has to break even or in recent years make a profit from transfers each and every season.
Yes I know we have a loan and high expenditure but still.......
I bet during every transfer window, all the 12-15 year plays spunk their pants at the thought of being signed by Arsenal
The main difference between Chelsea and us is that their owner actually feels joy and has ambition for his club, ie settling for nothing less than the greatest trophy that there currently is. He's ploughed loads of his own money, and just recently has started the rebuilding process, getting rid of dead wood like Kalou and replacing him with Hazard for £32 million and probably getting in Hulk for Drogba. Kroenke on the other hand is a mong who would rather we be trophyless for the next 10 years if it meant he could keep getting a good return. If we strengthened the squad each year with Arteta type signings for the past 7 years we'd not be as we are now. I dont know how our net spending looks but we've sold alot more than we've brought in, ie how much have we actually coffed up from within . I dont know if Wenger is constrained by the board though which has limited his spending.

If Ledley King can't get a new contract with Tottenham, and we manage to get rid of Djourou, Squillaci (send Miquel on loan), then if we can get King on board with cheap contract (£30k a week, say) then I very much think we should do it. I rate him very highly - as do some spud friends so I'm surprised, if that's the prevailing opinion, that he hasn't been offered a new contract. He is very injury prone and reliability is the main concern but there are no doubts about his ability as a defender IMO.
But that's only if: 1) we can get rid of Djourou and Squillaci, and 2) King accepts a cheap contract. Neither are very likely at all, I suppose.
In any case, I'm happy with the set of 4 CBs we have now: Vermaelen, Koscielny, Mertesacker and Miquel. I think Miquel has shown a lot of promise and, in contrast to Djouoru, Senderos and others we've given countless chances, he has always looked very composed and calm. You're never going to get a top CB as 4th choice so I think giving Miquel the odd game when necessary is fair. Other areas to improve first.
I still think, if by some miracle we are to make a big signing, the cash has to go to M'Vila or a similar defensive-mid. Any top DM will do. We leak far too many goals due to a lack of discipline in midfield and having Arteta and M'Vila/good DM as the 'sitters' (but not as useless going forward as Parker) we'll be in good shape. Ideally it'd be a fit Wilshere but otherwise I'm even happy for Song to get a crack at ACM where his maverick ways are less problematic.
It's not as if Wenger wouldn't break even when we were at Highbury. He's had reputation for getting value for money and making a profit from the transfer window since day one. It's part of the reason why we've been able to move stadiums.
Also, if we're in such a bad way with our finances, would it not make sense to keep our wage bill down and cut the number of players we have in our squad?
How do you know Kroenke is not providing AW with reasonable funds? I remember Vinegar saying that if he was given 100 million to spend on players, he would return it back. I think that alone is enough to know who is responsible for spending our 'transfer war chest' on the team.
Besides Kroenke has been on board for 1 year as majority owner and a max of 2-3 years as a major player, so I do not see how we can blame him. May be PHW and the other old guard, but not Kroenke. And if these guys are actually putting a strain on AW in doing his job, he should just quit... simples!
Vertonghen says he's signing for the spuds in the next couple of days. Good ambition from him and hope he is able to ambition an impact next season.
