Unless the criteria to reach the "top of the game" is on the international stage, at which point you'd have to discount C. Ronaldo and Messi which would just be silly.

I know people (media mainly) massively overhype English players, but to go to the other extreme and just discount them is just as silly.

I realise I've used 'silly' twice which makes my point look a bit.... silly.
Gerrard, again solid. An effective leader. Like a ever willing donkey, you can appreciate him, be grateful his latest lung bursting run broke things up, marvel at how hard he can swing a boot at a ball. It inspires in a different way I suppose.

What makes you think he's coming to us?

Sir Alex Ferguson has launched an astonishing attack on the BBC, saying that the national broadcaster is "arrogant beyond belief", has an "inability to apologise", and does not care about being sued "because they are so huge and have insurance." The Manchester United manager has also reiterated his stance that he will never speak to the corporation again.
    What a child.

Never understood the Gazza-mania. He was just a loudmouth c***, none of his antics were funny.
Lineker is up there for me due to the sheer amount of goals he scored, I agree he was just a poacher but one of the best, I agree the rest of his game was nothing special but I put him up there due to the amount of goals he scored for England.

Gazza yeah, IMO he was the most naturally gifted footballer I can remember England having, he had the kind of ability the likes of Messi and Ronaldo had, but yeah he did p*ss up the wall sadly for him.

Platini (who is now a **** of course), Zidane, Bale, Cruyff, Messi today plus a string of others, we all know the names. None English. Players like Rooney are, efficient, effective, they don't get you jumping out of your seat as a neutral unless it's to scream abuse for the latest dive in the box. Maybe Scholes gets a pass because he has the sheer professionalism to go with the fact he's an excellent if (again) slightly mechanical player.
I'd say Gazza was pretty entertaining with his amazing dribbling skills and ability to beat 3-4 5 players at a time, he had all the tricks in the book, he never made the most of them but he had them and if there was an English player with his ability today I guarantee he'd be labelled an entertainer...great dribblers are.
