I don't doubt that's true. I've never thought he was a racist. But I don't know how relevant all these supporting character references should be. Shouldn't we be looking at what he said and trying to make out what context it was in? That's surely the only relevant thing here. If someone's being charged with murder you don't look at the fact that he might volunteering in humanitarian work. Being a racist at heart, in itself, is not a crime.
its to build an image of the person in order to try and rationalise what triggered the defendant to react in a certain way, and whether it was uncharacteristic of him/her to do so. it's putting the pieces to the puzzle in order to find that final piece; all the statements and questions such as 'are you england captain?', 'how many times have you been sent off in your career?' and 'whats the largest attendance you have played in front of?' aim to do that. they want to see whether this was a man buckling under intense pressure or whether it was a continuation of his everyday persona.
Yeah pretty much. Character refs wouldn't have any bearing on an alleged off the cuff racist remark. It's how Liverpool scored an OG with their proclamations in the Suarez case. I also can't see a guilty verdict anyway. The reasonable doubt will be there...Terry might have Ashley Cole's head to thank for blocking the camera shot. The John Terry Foundation will open in Sudan and life will go on.
day 3 of terry trial done.

But my point is that even if it is uncharacteristic of him, why does it make a difference? You might just 'snap' under intense pressure and stab someone. Don't we usually just look at the result? Perhaps we don't - I don't know how the law works.
That said, I do think that Anton Ferdinand hasn't come out of this very well either. The fact that he was the one who got personal first by bringing up Terry's affair - it doesn't excuse a racial insult but Terry probably felt he needed to go as far as he could to wind Ferdinand up.
The saddest part of all is Cashley's comments were probably the most accurate, it was just silly handbags. Both were being immature. Terry's enough of a scumbag to bring colour into it but Anton was being a dick about it too.
Will the FA slap a ban on regardless of the outcome? If they banned Suarez on more flimsy evidence, Terry's got to get a similar no. of games?
