Not sure about that. When we had the best players we played the best football.
IMO one of our problems right now is that Wenger's trying to get a bunch of players to play great football and they're not quite good enough to. You see it at times in games when things are going well and we start trying to take the piss a bit and often get caught.
To an extent I agree, although those examples are ridiculous – those two are far too strong minded.
It’s the mentality of the team, concentrating far too much on possession over actually moving the ball forward. Just look at Barca, or even Swansea this season. Always moving the ball forward, looking for space to exploit and players to run in behind and move defenders around. The technical ability to do so is there, but the mentality is one where we are scared of losing the ball so almost incessantly moving the ball from side to side or backwards once we get to the edge of the penalty area. Compare this seasons Swansea to last seasons where it was a million passes not leading to enough chances being created, whereas this season laudrup has adopted the Spanish approach of balancing possession with the objective of creating as many chances are possible, always in the forefront of their mind.
We start games scared and pass our way through the games with the same mentality, worried about losing the ball and dealing with a well drilled team and not believing in their own ability enough to do more with the football at their feet apart from the safe option. that went out the door with cesc. him with wilshere behind would've been a dream combo.
Wenger with great players is a great manager: Proven. Do dispute. Fact.
Wenger with decent players is a decent manager: Possibly debatable. I'm sure a different manager could get more out of them but could a different manager get this squad to win things? No way IMO.
So the weak link is the players. To me this is obvious. We are never going to compete with Bayern, Manure, City, Chavs whoever when our most expensive player in our history cost £15m. It's impossible.
Stan needs to look at his investment and see that it will go down in value if he doesn't inject some cash. It's like buying a run down house in Mayfair and not spending any money doing it up. Sure, you've got a great piece of real estate but it would be so much better, and worth more, if you tarted it up a bit.
This team needs £100m spent on it to challenge with the big boys. Without that Arsenal FC is going nowhere, no matter who the manager is.
Most managers with great players will be great, so it's not much of a point.
The players aren't the weak link, it's the fact his management is limited that is, if he has to have great players all over the pitch or he can't win a thing then he's going to struggle to even win anything because it's not often you'll get a group of players like we had.
Wenger neither gets the best out of players, nor does he uses tactics or decent coaching (it seems) to make the most out of what he has. At the end of the day you can make all the excuses you want but he's the one that hand picked those players, if they're not good enough he only has himself to blame.
We need better players yes, but the way he spends the money is part of the problem, he buys nobodies and kids when he could use all the money spent to buy one or two top players that would make a difference. But it's long been clear established stars aren't his style.
"Weak link is the players" - who bought all that dross? I would definitely love to see how much our squad cost to assembly as opposed to that of the Mancs.
Name a manager around today who's won anything of note without having great players.
Klopp comes to mind.
