Pele is right. Messi has some way to go to be rated as highly as Thierry Henry, as far as I'm concerned, and then there's a chasm to Pele's status. Messi has age on his side, of course. But I watched extensive footage of Messi vs Henry recently and Henry is the better player. Maybe TH wasn't superior in tight dribbling, but in everything else go and dig out the footage for yourself and it's clear cut. But, Messi can still improve and probably will. Never really saw Cruff play but I do agree Maradona gets an awful lot of credit for what were relatively few highlights compared to the likes of Zidane or Platini. Zico was an astounding player too, every bit as talented as Maradona and the best free kick expert the world has ever seen. There's a tendency to rate players highly if they are still playing and Messi is thriving on this right now. There are other factors too, not least of which is his instinct to cheat at every opportunity. That should mark him down massively, but probably doesn't in most eyes.

I think it's more likely people will shy away from praising a player in that way if they are currently playing. I don't think Messi would have to anything more from now on to be rated as highly as Henry, rated higher in fact. Unfortunately for Henry he always had Ronaldinho shadowing over him, even in the seasons where he (Ronaldinho) didn't actually win anything.

Pele and Maradona transcend the game and that's probably why they will be rated higher than any other in the sport.

    Pele should STFU.

He thinks he's awesome because he scored a million goals against part timers in Brazil.
