What if you aren't in a position to protect your head?

Well exactly. You're not if your hands are buy your side. I mean, it must make sense in the context of a kicking-only martial art, but self-defence-wise, not so great. People will run at you and batter your head and you'll be too busy faffing about with your arms by your side.
