Sorry, lets just say Chavs got knocked out tonight.

Then it would only be top 4 to make it, but only the top 3 would be in it but the 4th team would have to qualify.

But if Chelsea win it would the 3rd place team have to qualify? Is there any official source confirming that?

Chelsea are finishing outside the top 4. If they win the CL, they qualify for the group stage - presumably.

The assumption therefore is, there remains only 3 automatic EPL spots - therefore the 3rd place team in effect has the 4th spot and therefore needs to play in the qualification round.

The PL have 4 places - 3 qualify immediately, the 4th has to go through the qualifying round. Simples.

Ah wait, I've only muddied the waters. According to MSN (don't ask) we would have to qualify. Doesn't make sense to me though, as Chelsea wouldn't qualify as an English team, technically.
