OLIVIER GIROUD says he is feeling pressure at Arsenal — as he expected to start life in England as a sub.
But the departure of Robin van Persie has changed all that.
The £12.8million man from Montpellier was the top scorer in French football last season but has yet to score in three games for Arsene Wenger’s side.
Giroud, 25, set to face Southampton today, was also jeered by French fans when he was subbed in the 2-0 win over Belarus on Tuesday.
While Lukas Podolski opened his account for Arsenal in the 2-0 win at Liverpool two weeks ago, striker Giroud has been unconvincing.
The 6ft 4in ace is the latest in a long line of French stars to play for Arsenal and believes he is learning under Wenger.
He said: “In reality, the pressure doesn’t come from following in the footsteps of Henry, Pires, Petit or Vieira but Robin van Persie’s departure.
“I was expecting to be his substitute but now I’m his natural successor. If I do have pressure, it’s on that level.
“Yet I’m not the type to panic. But it’s true you must realise what French players represent at this club, it’s down to me to keep that tradition going.
“The coach has faith in French players and signs a lot of them. The coach’s French touch is what gives the club its charm.
“Wenger’s the person I will learn a lot from, because I still need to improve. I know it and he knows it.
“He told me I’d made the right choice coming here, to improve.
“He welcomed me by explaining the intricacies of being a Premier League forward. How to position yourself, react when you get the ball.
“He’s always there to give advice. It’s better than someone who says nothing. Arsene is a teacher, excellent speaker and everyone knows it.
“There are a lot of French players in the squad. It helps you settle.
“It’s a bonus to hear your language spoken.
“But I don’t want to live apart, so I’ll immerse myself in English culture and its traditions. I regularly eat with the Francophone players but we’re not forming a clique. It’s good to mingle with everyone and I want to master the language.”
Giroud’s first game for Arsenal in the Champions League on Tuesday will mean a return to former club Montpellier.
He said: “I’m curious to know what reception I’ll get there. The memory I have of winning the title is of a bunch of carefree kids who managed to do something incredible without realising just what they’d achieved.”

http://www.dailystar.co.uk/football/...n-for-England/ROY HODGSON is planing a shock England call-up for Carl Jenkinson.
The right-back has been arguably Arsenal’s most improved player this season and caught England coach Hodgson’s eye.
With Bacary Sagna out injured, Jenkinson had played every minute for the Gunners this season before Wednesday’s League Cup tie against Coventry.
The 20-year-old has been part of an impressive defence that has conceded only two Premier League goals this season.
Hodgson names his squad for the World Cup qualifying double header against San Marino and Poland next week.
Glen Johnson and Kyle Walker are his first-choice right-back options. But Johnson is suspended for the San Marino clash.
Jenkinson’s chances of a call-up have increased after their back-up, Liverpool defender Martin Kelly, suffered a season-ending knee injury at the weekend.
Finland are also desperate to call up Jenkinson and their strong interest could force Hodgson to make his move and claim him now.
He is eligible for Finland through his mother and has played for them at under-21 and under-19 level as well as England’s under-17s.
Jenkinson, who joined Arsenal for £1m from Charlton last summer, has already turned down a senior Finland call-up.
But after his eye-catching start to the season the Finns are expected to again press Jenkinson to make a decision on his international future.
An appearance in a competitive match for Finland would make Jenkinson ineligible for England. Shortly after signing Jenkinson,
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger predicted England would come calling.
He said: “I believe Jenkinson will have an impact here and you will fight for him not to play for Finland.”
