Sir Alex Ferguson has called for an end to the hostility between old foes Manchester United and Liverpool.

The clubs have a long history and a bitter rivalry both on and off the pitch.

But following this week's release of the Hillsborough Independent Panel's report - which cleared Liverpool supporters of any blame in the 1989 tragedy in which 96 supporters died - Ferguson is keen for a better relationship and more friendly rivalry to develop.

"We are two great clubs, ourselves and Liverpool," said Ferguson, ahead of Saturday's clash with Wigan.

"We should understand each other's problems. Maybe a line will be drawn in the sand in terms of their behaviour towards each other."The teams face each other next weekend at Anfield, and will be hoping for none of the controversy of last season.

Liverpool forward Luis Suarez was banned for eight matches after racially abusing Patrice Evra when the sides met last October at Anfield.

He then refused to shake the defender's hand before the game at Old Trafford in February this year, sparking an ill-tempered game which United won 2-1.

MANCHESTER UNITED and England fans will only know if Wayne Rooney peaked early when he turns 28.
That is the verdict of former Three Lions defender Gareth Southgate, who has questioned whether the superstar striker is past his best.
Rooney, 26, burst onto the scene as a precocious teenager at Everton, before moving to United for £27million in 2004.
He was one of the standout performers of Euro 2004 as a fearless 18-year-old but has failed to hit the same heights in an England shirt since.
Gone are the days when people mentioned Rooney in the same breath as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo suggesting that, despite an enviable record of 182 goals in 368 games for United, he could be on the decline.
Southgate said: “He’s still a young man so hopefully we’re still to see the best of him.

“But some players peak young and their best years are earlier than others.
“We won’t know with Wayne Rooney if that’s the case until he’s 28-30.”
One player who, by his own admission, peaked early as a player is Michael Owen.
The ex-Liverpool striker was the boy wonder of England alongside Southgate at World Cup 98, scoring an unforgettable goal in the second-round defeat to Argentina.
Injuries blighted the latter part of his career as he struggled to get on the pitch during his spells at Newcastle and Manchester United.
Owen signed a one-year deal at Stoke this summer and his Potters strike partner Peter Crouch has not ruled out the possibility of their little and large combination earning the duo England recalls.
Southgate, however, cannot see Owen adding to his 89 caps and 40 goals for his country due to his fitness problems.
The pundit said: “Being at Manchester United was a quite a good scenario for someone like Michael.
“Physically it’s very difficult for him to get on the field every week. He wasn’t able to do that three or four years ago, I don’t see him being able to do that now.
“At United, he was able to come into the side, make an impact and not have to play every week.”
