It wasn't Merts' man. Merts had his guy covered but Verms didn't have his man.

    Aye. Twas Verms man....

Plus we didn't move out as a line.

Basically, we defended very very shitly.

He was ball watching and had no idea where his man was. If he was a bit tighter on his guy, he could have intercepted the knock or at least challenged Huntelaar, but he was moving forward and got caught out by the header. Watch Merts' movement and he steps in to cover his guy just in case the ball goes to him. If it did, he'd have at least been in position to get a challenge in. I rate Merts. Anticipates the danger and positions himself well.

Yep. he's been good this year. What he lacks in pace, he makes up for in positional sense, and reading of the game.

I wonder if TV5 is feeling the pressure of the captaincy. Some players do, I guess. Gallas was worse as captain. What they had positionally earlier on the year seems to have vansihed....very strange.

In any case, yet another defensive error costs us a goal

Looking at that makes it pretty clear. Merts is marking the other striker. Wasn't his man. He did his best to get across when the ball got to him but the Verm should have had him. Mistakes happen, Shalke are a decent side. The lack of chances and shots is more of a concern.

Should have signed Huntelaar years ago.

    Would've killed Bendtner though.

I think he'd struggle in our squad. He needs service and we're just not creating anything for our strikers. As Letters said, that's more of worry over defence. Mistakes happen at the back, but that goal was coming. We're probably going to get battered when we visit their ground.
