Smash a players leg to bits: Poor bloke, he's not that kind of player.
Give someone a little nibble: Burn him!
Football is fucked. Sign him up, I'll sing his name loud and proud.
UEFA and FIFA don't condone racism either. I never said they did and I'm not saying that's what's happening on here either. The point is, self interest is why people now feel a need to explain his actions, put it into context or now have the view that it was blown out of proportion and we shouldn't make too much of a fuss about it, when a few months back, most would have just written him off as a cheating, diving, racist with Hannibal Lecter like tendencies. Not many here were quick to question the popular media consensus on Suarez. Most would just reinforce it when mentioning him and prod away like how we do with John Terry and the kicking racism out of football image with Diaby.
Suarez and his actions aren't all that fascinating. It's the switch in perspective from some Arsenal fans now that he's being linked with a potential move here, that is more interesting. We were fine to be swept along by the media frenzy when he wasn't associated with us but now that he's linked, we're now trying to moralise. That's the interesting part and it's why I make the FIFA/UEFA comparison. You can sort of understand why Sep Baltter has said silly things in the past or why a blind eye was turned for certain ugly incidents without condoning it. FIFA and Sep have their own goals and agendas to worry about, they have their own self interests, money and revenue mostly, so actually doing something about racism in football was never high up on the priority list. Our priority as Gooners, it's winning back the title and signing a quality player. That trumps his sketchy past for most. Wanting him at the club isn't the problem, the revisionism is.
This all links back to yesterday's discussion. Racism isn't some sort of top down ideology past down from the ruling class to the lower. It works on an individual level and who you can identify with. The atrocities and 'real racism' you mentioned yesterday, it only works if the majority remain passive. You're right to say this Suarez situation is a storm in tea cup, but it's a small example of how we operate. Self interest comes naturally.

of course it does and you are as culpable as all of us when it comes to accepting blissful ignorance when it suits you.
so the best course of action here is to get off the moral high horse, put the beast down and realise you are preaching to yourself as much as anyone else.
people will be far more affected by stephen lawrence than some footballing spastic who said something wrong because these millionaires are not within our realm. who really cares? football or sport isn't real. we pay to watch it but the divide is so extreme that it may as well be on a TV even if we watch it 'live'. we pay, they perform, then we all fuck off back to something else. it's theatre. they even have their own yearly oscars. not a pat on the back from the public. but a huge love in every year.
we all look after ourselves, which isn't a bad thing. it's encoded within us. even the religious among us have an aim to do good so they can enter what they believe to be a good place after death. but self interest isn't all there is because just like this whole pathetic, blown out of proportion suarez-is-he-supposedly-racist-or-just-a-fucking-idiot case, the answer rests very clearly in the murky grey area.
If you have't followed the debate with me and NQ then you're not going to get it and will probably be offended. This is a response and answer to his earlier post about the root of racism. He's looking further out and points to the state and big governments, I'm saying it starts at an individual level and you have to look closer to home. As said, we all look after ourselves and you're right to say it's encoded within us and that's what I'm pointing at.
Not necessarily. As NQ was pointing out, there are even bigger issues happening right now that nobody bats an eyelid at.people will be far more affected by stephen lawrence than some footballing spastic who said something wrong because these millionaires are not within our realm. who really cares?
You talk a lot about football tribalism a lot and it's part of the game that makes me cringe sometimes. It may sound preachy, but too bad.
We used our tour to delay and now we are using every else's. Good stuff. Then there will be the Emirates Cup which is huge so we'll need to focus on that instead of distracting transfers. But then what? It could get very tricky in the latter half of August. But Wenger said: “We are not close to signing Suarez... or anyone else. We are ready to do quick deals but all the transfers do not depend only on us. We are prepared to wait. “It looks very unlikely that we will have anyone before the Emirates Cup next week because everyone is on tour at the moment and it’s very difficult to get in touch with people.”

Society is now one polished horde
Formed by two mighty tribes, the bores and the bored.
"After all, it was the Gunners’ goalkeeper who started the move that culminated in Thomas’ crowning glory. It was Lukic who, in injury time, decided to throw the ball out to Lee Dixon rather than lump it long..."
