I have no idea how Ivan will swerve clear of the backlash if the club fail to live up to the hype. The backlash will be immense and he’ll have to push Wenger under the bus to save his rep.
I think the club can cope with any backlash, they've shown they can before. As long as the stadium remains near full (and it will as always), they have nothing to be concerned about.
They have excuses for all possible scenarios, we'll sign a couple players and they'll claim these are super super quality players who will improve the team and help us challenge for trophies which is always our aim.
Having seen the response over the last few years, many of the fans will buy this and just get on with supporting the team throughout the season as normal, saying there's nothing we can do about it now we may as well get behind what we have.
They may be convinced but they aren't at all convincing. It went from a release clause in a contract to a verbal agreement. Sounds and smells like the usual stuff agents push. Nobody said £40mill is not a serious bid. Of course it's serious because Liverpool could have said yes. But if we have no intention of meeting their asking price and instead are prepared to wait it out to see if they crack or the player and agent force the issue then this process is far more likely to fail than succeed. If all our eggs are in the one basket and yet we aren't prepared to push on and close the deal then I'd say there's a strange attitude in play here. Either we get a deal or we let it fizzle out. Either would suit just as well if Wenger's words are anything to go by. We pulled the same stunt with Fellaini and apparently he had a real clause in his contract. And no interest in Fabregas either, that can wait another year apparently. So the money is serious but is the ambition to land one of these players serious? Seems like no if you look at the evidence so far.

The mood has shifted and people are clearly getting increasingly pissed off with the lack of investment, especially now they've come out and said we can compete financially. You can see from the mood on here that if we don't do something serious this summer people aren't just going to think "oh well, they tried, fair enough".
But will they care if we stomp our feet? What, other than not going to games, can we actually do that will affect them in any way?
The ground will remain full. People will still buy shirts. More and more money is coming from sources which the fans don't have much of a hand in.
What exactly does it matter to a man sat in Texas, seeing the pound notes sat in the bank?
It's better to burn out, than to fade away.
Wenger being a magical manager, thinking "rod and back" here - while also thinking it's eminently conceivable the Arsenal hierarchy will merely shrug their shoulders and expect Wenger, new signings or no new signings [or questionable signings] to once again merely pull the rabbit out of the hat; has indeed he has so many times previously in regard to the ECL and for many of course ECL qualification is all that seems to matter.
