Which leads to another aspect of Wenger's unbearable arrogance. His loathing of British players. Not signing Parker was a mortal sin, Wenger will go to hell for that one. Bellamy was there too. Cahill, of course. Would any of these players have been the subject of a serious bidding war? Maybe Cahill if the spuds were determined, which it looks like they weren't or else they would have landed him.

Or it could be a lot more sinister and contrived. There's a pattern developing. All the under-bids, the "we spotted him first" stories. Maybe the lateness of the bids was a hedge against them ever being accepted. Which top club wants to lose a key player late in the window with no chance to sign a replacement? And yet the board can tell the fans, we bid this, we are ambitious but it just didn't work this time. What about the £10mill Jagialka bid? Our apparent desire to insult the other team rather than genuinely negotiate. £6mill for Cahill, was that deal dead the minute we made that bid? Speculation in my part. The only thing we know for sure is they managed to bank the Cesc and Na$ri cash.

Could be, it seems Wenger has some influence with the board though and if he doesn't care about this team enough to put in a little more cash then his acting towards the end of last season deserves an Oscar, so either they're able to pull the wool over some pretty shrewd eyes and keep the cash for themselves or there's something else going on, my money's on the 'something else' being more likely.

Whatever the case, it's scary that our manager is able to influence the board to sell our star assets on the cheap.

I accept in this instance that the sale of Cesc was inevitable but you've got to wonder if we could have extracted more money out of Barca if we would have dug our heels in a bit more.

I do feel that this story pretty much puts to bed the notion that Arsene is the Board's lapdog.
