That was idiotic, and he must have known it was going to blow up in his face. I don't agree with the way he's chosen to defend his actions there either - that would have been an easy one to hold his hands up to and just admit that it was a poor decision.

(Although, having said that, I'm not sure what I would have done in Mesut's shoes, especially if I still had any extended family back in Turkey, or harboured any hopes of ever moving there in the future? Erdogan doesn't seem like the kind of person who you easily say no to.)

That being said, the treatment he's received from the German press and the DFB clearly goes way beyond just the photo - the knives have been out, sharpened and ready for him for years, IMO (probably stemming from some loud-mouth at Bayern who took a dislike to him at some point - they usually seem to control the tone of voice for everything in German football), and Özil has stupidly given them the perfect opening to legitimise their discomfort towards his Turkish heritage. Very hard not to agree with some of the points he makes, and that there's no racist and discriminatory undertones to it.

The backlash to this is going to be get really vicious and spiteful now, you watch.

Complete nonsense, pure self-pity. No German newspaper, website, no broadcaster has made Özil's Turkish roots responsible for the catastrophe of the national team. Invented by Özil to become a victim of racist injustice in the media. It's always the same with him. If you criticize him, everyone else is to blame, never himself. He has been photographed with a dictator and I know that many Turks here in Germany (in my circle of friends are some) were disappointed by Özil, almost shocked that he does not question the reality of this man in any way ! He also assumes that every German is a racist who dares to criticize him for his athletic achievements and for his inappropriate photo. Sorry that I judge so Ozil, but his self-importance is unbearable!

Personally, I do not think that he has anything more to prove with the German national team. The reality is that from now on, he will always be the scapegoat whenever the German team plays badly or has a bad result. As it is, a not insignificant number of Arsenal fans will be happy to see the back of him. I can only imagine the opprobrium that will be heaped on him should Jack Wilshere score the winning goal for West Ham against Arsenal.
The clue is in my post.

Always a mistake for footballers to get involved with politics or make any political statements, seeing as he's living in Germany you'd think he'd be awre of the issues and perhaps stay away from things like this.

Having done so he should have just dealt with the repercussions, retiring and then making comments on twitter was probably not the best move. In a way the guy at Bayern is right, we haven't seen the best of Ozil for years, I don't think he's been great in an Arsenal shirt, but that could also be due to the style of play.

Last time he was at his best was at Real, there's no doubt about his talent, but he needs to deliver more regularly and show what he can do, he'son big money for us now.

Exactly! I've noticed the same damn thing. Most of his chances comes from crosses and cutbacks. He rarely plays a passes that cuts open the defence and gets our strikers one on one with the keeper.

Ozil can fuck off. I've had enough of his half arsed, part time bullshit.

He says he's only treated as a German when he plays well - I think he can also only consider himself an Arsenal player when he turns up and puts a shift in.

We should definitely be selling him this window IMO, I can't stand him anymore.

But it's about time Ozil stepped up. Wenger's gone and we have top quality strikers for him to supply so there can't be any more excuses.
