Arsenal Chief Scout, Steve Rowley has recently returned from a scouting mission to Argentina and Switzerland.
wearethenorthbank.com understands Rowley was in Argentina to run the rule over Ricardo Alvarez. He watched Vélez Sarsfield defeat Gimnasia La Plata 2-0 in the Primera Division on May 22, a game in which Alvarez came on as a second half sub.
Arsene Wenger has briefed Rowley and his network of scouts to shortlist targets ahead of the new season.
Wenger wants to strengthen his midfield and create competition for Alex Song – who could be off to the African Cup of Nations in January.
The Arsenal boss rates Emmanuel Frimpong highly, but with the inexperienced 19-year-old having missed the entirety of last season due to a knee injury, he cannot rely on the youngster making an immediate impact.

Wenger today missed out on Phil Jones whom he had earmarked to provide cover in the holding midfield role as well as bolster Arsenal’s defence.
After leaving Argentina, Rowley headed off to Switzerland to watch the Elite Group 2 of the European Under-19 Championships – a round Robin featuring England, Spain, Montenegro and host nation Switzerland.

Rowley was once again casting his eye over Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – as well as scouting for other talent.

Porto's prolific striker Falcao admits that he could be tempted to move to another club in Europe this summer.

Falcao, 25, scored a record 17 goals in Porto's victorious Europa League campaign to put himself firmly in the spotlight and Real Madrid, Arsenal and Tottenham have all been linked with the Colombian.

The striker has previously maintained his commitment to Porto, but with a £26 million release clause in his contract and some of Europe's elite willing to match it, he has admitted his desire to play at the highest level.

"It would be difficult to leave Porto this summer because the leaders of the club want to support the scheme of the team and reinforce the squad so they can compete in Champions League," Falcao told talkSPORT.

"I prefer not to read the press but I know I have been linked with Real Madrid and big English clubs like Arsenal and Tottenham. In Europe there are big leagues and I am at a moment of my career when I would like to experience it."
