Sky Sports sources understand that Tottenham have turned down a £22million offer from Chelsea for Luka Modric.
The Croatian playmaker has emerged as one of the Premier League's most creative and stylish performers since arriving at White Hart Lane in 2008.
A series of sparkling displays for Spurs last season reportedly attracted the attention of several clubs, with Manchester United believed to be admirers of the 25-year-old.
However, it is Chelsea who are believed to have made the first move for Modric this summer, lodging a big-money bid for his services.
Tottenham rejected the proposal but it is understood that the Blues are planning to return with an improved offer that will further test their resolve.
Chelsea are currently without a manager after sacking Carlo Ancelotti but owner Roman Abramovich appears ready to invest heavily in the squad as he is determined to bounce back after a season without silverware.
Spurs have previously made it clear that they intend to keep hold of all their key players after missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification.
Harry Redknapp stated over the weekend that Modric was crucial to their hopes of future success, saying: "If we sell Luka we are just a selling club basically."
Modric, though, has refused to rule out the possibility of a transfer this summer

Yeh, I tend to agree. He hasn't grabbed any chances he's been given and at this point we need guys with cojones rather than another slight, technical player who doesn't seem up for it most of the time. Damn shame as he has plenty of ability and I rather think we had him earmarked as the Chicharito we need, either get Reyes on the blower to point out that you need to take your chances or waste half your career (some might not call a liga title a waste but ) or send him off somewhere else with a ncie sell-on clause just in case.

Nah, he's been given as many chances as most, more than some, he just hasn't taken anywhere near as much advantage of them as he should, if you do well once in a match and impress in training you get more chances, he hasn't so he hasn't.

I would gladly put all of this to rest except there two stories about Nasri: one saying that he wants £6 million a year and another saying that he is not going to sign a new contract. What are we to believe?
