I think Messi was seen as someone with immense talent and destined for the first team, Cesc was not. There would've been no chance of Barcelona letting him go and by 2003 he had probably developed such an affinity for Barcelona for what they had done for him, he wouldn't have wanted to go anyway.
Having said that, I am sure Wenget will come out with an anecdote soon about he nearly signed Messi but unfortunately tripped over his own feet and knocked himself unconscious before it could be sealed.

Barca would accept offers (if they're substantial enough) for Dani Alves and David Villa apparently (so says Balague).
Alves can fuck off, who'd want that **** here?
Villa can come.
We didn't do anything wrong on the Cesc transfer. Barca were just pissed at the rules. In England you could offer professional contracts at 16 whereas in Spain it was only at 17 that you could. So we were able to offer Cesc a contract and he came whereas Barca couldn't pin him down (and they might not have been too fussed at the time anyway). Similar with Merida and Toral.
With Barca providing all the medical shit for all his growth treatments he wouldn't have wanted to go anywhere anyway.

SPURS are on the verge of pulling off a major coup by beating Manchester City and Arsenal to the £6million capture of Jan Vertonghen.
The powerful 25-year-old Ajax defender is out of contract in a year and his club hope to create an auction to up the fee.
But 6ft 2in Vertonghen has told the Dutch champions he has set his heart on moving to Spurs.
His agent Mustapha Nakhli confirmed: “There is enormous interest. A number of clubs have made concrete approaches, with Tottenham among them.
“Jan has a few dream clubs. Playing at the top of the Premier League is something he has worked really hard for.”
Vertonghen, who will be named Ajax’s Player of the Year on Monday, was initially tipped to join Arsenal because of his close friendship with Belgium team-mate Thomas Vermaelen.
Ajax are stubbornly refusing to accept the White Hart Lane club’s offer so Vertonghen — who admits he is a Spurs fan — has threatened to sit tight for a year and walk out for nothing.

Centre-back might not be the most obvious point of concern, but I'd like us to sign Vertonghen. Well, going by what everyone says, never seen the bloke play. There's no substitute for good substitutes. But I think everyone wants our squad to be leaner and possessing more super quality. Our game places a lot on the centre-backs being good in possession and starting attacks. When one of Vermaelen or Koscielny don't play, some pubber comes in with no technique at all. And obviously Djourou and Squillaci aren't very good anyway. Say someone was generous enough to take them off our hands, we could have 3 + Vertonghen + Ignazi. It'd be great. But clearly unlikely. Spurs have a more pressing need as their defenders are 50 years old. Let's have a really good additional attacking player and a central midfielder.

Vertonghen can play DM too, so he'd be a good option from the sounds of it. It's about upgrading and complimenting what we already have, not being concerned as to where player x could play or who we already have there. With the level of injuries we sustain, everyone has a run in the team at some point and has their chance to impress. Squad game tbf.

Good post. . .the idea should be to have a squad of players we can believe in. Thing is now. , . When a cb goes down we only have DJ or Squid to come in, it doesnt work, does it?
Veetonghen will give us the quality we are missing. . ,when like this year Merts died and Kos got suspended and if he is good enough will become first team.
Price wise it makes sense, although will go higher, I imagine he wont cost the world and considering we were dallying with similar prices for Samba or Jags, its all good.
TV5 can give us satisfactory cover at lb but we saw that 4 cbs do not work, with that in mind lb is an area of concern. I have mentioned that I think Gibbs has done well recently but his health is a major concern as is Santos's defending. Santos at best is a left midfielder who comes on as a sub. Cover for Gibbs is needed

Vertonghen makes perfect sense for us - could compete for a starting place at CB and provides cover at LB, DM and even left midfield in a pinch. All that for less than £10m. Established international who already plays with Vermaelen and played with him at Ajax. Should fit right in. Only concern might be a history of injury - but then, that means he still fits right in.

Your next job is not to bring Wilshere and Diaby back WUMger, that's the medical staff's job and requires no effort whatsoever on your part. Bastard. That better be a windup.
I don't think we should be looking at a CB and by those comments I don't think we are. Need players who can get goals from midfield and attack. Everything else is secondary. Wumger's been pulling out the classics recently. It's a bit annoying that he's still referring to Diaby like he's alive. Shreeves needs to let Wenger know what the score is.

ARSENAL will make the first move in the race for Fulham’s Clint Dempsey.
His contract expires next summer and the Cottagers’ have offered the USA international striker a new three-year deal.
Dempsey has 23 goals this term as an out-and-out striker but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger wants to play him behind Robin van Persie and Lukas Podolski.
Earlier in the week the front man, 29, was linked with a move to Liverpool after their chairman, Tom Werner, claimed any club would be lucky to have him.
But Fulham boss Martin Jol said: “If a manager does that it’s different as it’s a tap-up. If it’s an owner, he probably does not know the rules.”
If Arsenal fail to land Dempsey they have a plan B in place — with a firm interest in Blackburn’s striker Junior Hoilett, 21.

Having confirmed the £11m signing of Lukas Podolski last week, Arsenal are in advanced negotiations with Rennes for their 21-year-old holding midfielder.
There had also been interest in M’Vila from Inter Milan, but the expectation in France is that he will now sign for Arsenal after being convinced by Wenger’s vision for the club.
It is unlikely, however, that any deal will be finalised before the end of the season, placing even more importance on beating West Bromwich Albion on Sunday and so clinching third place and Champions League football for a 16th consecutive season.
As revealed by the Telegraph Sport in March, reinforcing the holding midfield position is a priority this summer for Wenger and M’Vila has always been the preferred target. Indeed, Arsenal also made an enquiry last summer but were told that M’Vila was not for sale.
That situation has since changed, with Rennes resigned to selling their star player this summer.
While the form of Alex Song has delighted Wenger, there is also an appreciation that Arsenal do lack experienced cover in this position.
As well as M’Vila, Atheltic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez has been scouted.
Although Arsenal have no shortage of emerging central midfielders, the concern is that Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky and Abou Diaby are all players who also like to push forward.
Song’s defensive qualities have made him a regular over the past four seasons – and he is likely to be offered a significantly improved contract later this year – but there has been a lack of obvious cover.
Emmanuel Frimpong and Francis Coquelin are both highly promising but largely still unproven at the very highest level. The addition of a player like M’Vila would also give Wenger the option of sometimes playing with two holding midfielders.
Wenger is keen to get his transfer business concluded swiftly this summer and so avoid a repeat of last year when he lost both Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri after the Premier League season had already started.
There is also the hope that the arrival of major signings like Podolski and M’Vila will have a positive knock-on effect for the forthcoming contract negotiations with Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott. Arsenal’s current transfer record is the £15 million that was spent on Andrei Arshavin.

Sounds like people think Chavs have already won the CL! They havent, wont and fourth will remain open for one of us three to grab. . . although I see third for us.
I also remember last summers stories telling us MVilla wont make a decision till we have won through the prems!

Arsenal have agreed a £17.7million fee with Rennes for midfielder Yann M’Vila but are yet to confirm personal terms with the club’s Champions League participation in the balance.
It is understood the framework of a four-year deal worth around £60,000 a week has been provisionally agreed but both parties are unlikely to finalise terms before Sunday’s final Premier League fixtures.
The Gunners remain third which brings with it automatic Champions League qualification but could yet finish outside the top four as Tottenham and Newcastle lie within striking distance should they falter at West Brom.
Inter Milan are keen to land M’Vila but the 21-year-old has indicated his preference to move to England.
Although M’Vila is still expected to move to Arsenal even if they miss out on the Champions League, a failure to qualify for Europe’s top competition would mean the deal would have to be renegotiated.
The Gunners are keen to finalise the transfer as soon as possible, particularly before the start of Euro 2012, where M’Vila is expected to play a key role for France and the club fear his price could significantly increase.

Wenget - I expect a quiet transfer market
Arsène Wenger expects a relatively quiet summer in the transfer market - at Arsenal and beyond.
The Arsenal manager has already snapped up Cologne striker Lukas Podolski ahead of the 2012/13 season and he has been linked with many more potential signings. Wenger admits he may add "one or two" new recruits but he thinks that clubs will be restricted by squad quotas and economic troubles.
"We have already bought Podolski and we have bought five players during the season when it had already started," Wenger told Arsenal Player.
"Our job will be focused on inside [matters] now we have Podolski. That means to get Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby back in a healthy situation and then I believe we have quite a big squad. It will be [our intention] to trim a little bit and if possible add one or two players.
"I believe that the summer will be quiet for many reasons," he added. "First of all in England you have a 25-man limited squad number. Secondly the financial situation all over Europe is really bad and in some countries they have other worries than football. Therefore I expect it to be quiet.
"In our job, and this is like a football match, it is not completely predictable. But on the vibes I get even from the clubs who are big spenders, they all want to slow down."

Changing formation doesn't magically allow you to field more than 11 players either and they could both fill slots in a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 so there's either room for them in the squad or not, regardless of system.

For the benefit of the club, we need to get relegated to League 2. This will benefit the club because the board and Wenger will go. As will all the players and a lot of the less serious fans. And the club will go bankrupt. But it will be for the best.

Given our start to the season, I would say 3rd is quite an achievement. That's if we don't screw things up today. But we can't just look at the league position and say there has been an improvement because there hasn't. The way we've ended things suggests we're still on the road to nowhere. I doubt one transfer window will solve the many problems we have. We could get off to a flying start next season but you just know this team will blow it. We need a change in management.

The worse thing that could actually happen to the club would be for us to win a trophy, because that would vindicate the manager and stratergy that true fans know is rubbish and keep a desperate man in the job so that he could further ruin this club.

My own personal take on our position is that given the relative strength of the squads, 3rd is just above where we should be. Mancity have way the best squad of players, ManU and Chelsea have better players than us overall and we are about the same as the Spuds and Newcastle. So given a set of equal calibre managers. City should be way above ManU with Chelsea abut 10 points behind and any of us Totts and Barcodes in either 4-6 positions. Problem is we have probably the 10th ranked manager in the league IMO.The reason i say that is that I can think of at least 6 managers in the EPL who would have done better than 3rd or at least closer to 2nd pointswise with the squad we have. So you can say the team have out performed themselves. So this begs the question, why do we have such a shitty squad. Why do we have 12-15 players that no one would wish upon their worst enemies. If we had better players in reserve and not have to play crap like Ramsey week in week out we would be so much better off and IF we have a better manger we could actually win things.
To my mind the mangers who have done best are, 1, Anderson Cooper at Newcastle for possibly being 3rd with the 5th best squad, 2 Ferguson for keeping pace with City, a much better squad,. Wenger would have gotten a honourable mention here for being 3rd with the squad we have, but whose fault is it that half our players are crap. Mancini is a duffer for being nose to nose with United having within his position twice the number of quality players and not knowing WTF to do with them. Chelsea are a mess because the players manage the team not the manager, they will be just as woeful next year if drastic changes arent made there.
i accept that, and raise you a podolski
Wow, one player from a smallish club for 10 million, think you need to put something more on the table.

It's so weird how - with some other clubs in Europe - it's very easy for players to be so open about joining other clubs. Think about Hazard at Lille or Kagawa's teammates here; their fans almost accept that that's the way it is. Although Podolski seemed to be less keen to reveal that he was moving to us at the end of the season.
Anyway - this Kagawa guy - he's supposed to be the mutt's nuts. I can think of quite a few clubs that would be interested in signing a goalscoring attacking-mid so, like M'Vila, we'll be priced out. £10-12m is our limit. This guy will go for a lot more considering the hype around him.

Kagawa is reportedly available for that much because he's out of contract next year, plus he doesn't have the same profile as other attacking midfielders out there at the moment, so he'd be a wise purchase for a club like us who go after value for money signings.

Borussia Dortmund star Shinji Kagawa has met with Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson amid speculation linking him with an Old Trafford move.
Kagawa, who has a year remaining on his contract with the Bundesliga champions, has stalled over signing a new deal, saying he wants to 'think hard' before making a decision over his future.
The Red Devils appear to be frontrunners for his signature after the Japan international met with Ferguson for talks in Manchester this week, and he claims the United boss had good things to say about him.
The 23-year-old forward said: "It was good that I was able to meet him in person and talk."

Ferguson 'had some good words', the player added when asked about the meeting, without disclosing what they discussed.
The United manager had watched him score in Dortmund's 5-2 German Cup final victory over Bayern Munich in Berlin on Saturday.
Kagawa, who netted 17 goals for Dortmund this season to help them secure a second consecutive title, has been linked to other high-profile clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea and AC Milan.
"I want to think hard before making my decision," he added. "I want to choose a team where I can take on challenges."

Arsenal target Yann M’Vila has confirmed that he will make a decision on his future following Rennes' final game of the season against Dijon on Sunday.
Reports last week had suggested that the north London club had agreed a fee for the France international.
However, M’Vila has announced he intends to make a decision on where his future lies once the French domestic campaign comes to a conclusion this weekend.
"I'll make my decision after the game against Dijon [on Sunday]," M’Vila told RMC.
Although reluctant to hint at where his future may lie, M’Vila has conceded he is open to a move away from his native France.
He continued: "It is true that I would like to improve my game and for that, I have to look elsewhere. Why not in a foreign country?"
M’Vila has reportedly been a long-term target of Arsene Wenger’s and it is expected that the Gunners boss will have to smash the club’s record transfer fee, currently at £15 million for Russian midfielder Andrey Arshavin, to secure the 21-year-old’s signature.
M’Vila has been an ever-present for fifth-placed Rennes this season, making 36 appearances as well as captaining the side for the first time.

Tottenham have agreed personal terms with Ajax star Jan Vertonghen but the move has hit a snag over the Dutch club’s £13 million asking price. The 25-year-old was a guest at Spurs' 2-0 win over Fulham on Sunday before he had talks with club executives and was shown around the Londoners’ new training centre in Enfield.
Vertonghen has chosen Spurs ahead of their north London rivals Arsenal and has agreed to a salary worth around £60,000-a-week, almost twice his wages at Ajax. The defender, who was named Eredivisie player of the year, wants to join Spurs irrespective of whether they play in next season’s Champions League.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is now in advanced negotiations over a deal with Ajax but the clubs are described as "some way apart" on agreeing a transfer fee, much to the frustration of Vertonghen and the White Hart Lane side.
Ajax value their captain at £13m and have so far refused to compromise on the fee, with Tottenham currently offering £8.1m, which they believe is good value for a player who has just one year remaining on his contract.
Tottenham still expect to secure an agreement with Ajax and will step up talks this week amid fears that rival suitors, including Arsenal or AC Milan, could attempt to hijack the deal.
Spurs made an official move for the Belgian at the start of this month having failed with an attempt to sign him in January. Vertonghen has chosen Spurs as his preferred destination as he believes he will be able to play more regularly in his favourite centre-back position for a Champions League calibre club.
Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager, considers Vertonghen a key part of his plans for next season and a long-term replacement for club captain Ledley King, who suffers from ongoing knee problems.
"Tottenham are absolutely my favourite," the defender told De Telegraaf last week. "Tottenham is a fantastic football club that has the tradition I want. They buy young, eager, offensive-minded players.
"[But] the Ajax board are asking for a very big amount for a player whose contract is running out in a year. I trust that both Tottenham and Ajax will put some water in the wine and they will soon reach an agreement.
"I hope that this awareness is there, because a transfer lingering for weeks like Maarten Stekelenburg's [to Roma] seems very harsh.
"He joined at the end of Roma's preparation [for the new season]. I want to be able to blend in with the other players at Spurs from the start [of pre-season training]."

it's not about money because he's hardly earning much by todays standard if he goes to spurs. really hope chelsea win the champions league so the tossers across the road don't get european football.

So he wants to go to spurs because they bought Sandro.
Players use to stay stuff like that about us in the old days, now we're not a very desirable destination.

I don't think we went in for him, besides he was practically begging us to sign him a month or so ago........
I like him as a player, he'll be a good signing for the Spuds.

Yes. This is the first time a player has ever said something nice about a club who are about to sign them.

Apparently Hazard has said on Canal+ that he doesn't want to go to a club where he wouldn't be assured of starting. If that's accurate then why would he opt for Citeh I wonder?
He also said he'd consider Arsenal, I stress, apparently.

More I hear (apparently) from this guy the less I like him and the less I want him anywhere near the club.

The only reason he has 'chosen' spuds is because we weren't that interested in him to try and sign him.

How can he consider us if he has already said hell be playing for one of the Manchester clubs next season?
