Saurez deal all but confirmed - cash only deal.
Funnily enough just watching McEnroe in the veterans tournament and he chucked his racket in disgust. Crowd started laughing thinking it was a joke but soon stopped. Think McEnroe was actually throwing a tantrum.
(Btw, don't mean to show you up with my tennis expertise, MS. It's not a competition.)
anyway Ornsy says Juventus are very keen to take Sanchez so we'd better start looking for new undesirable targets. When's the last time we won a high profile transfer battle against a biggie?

Rumours going round that Chelsea are gonna bid £60m for Pogba. This will make Juve cash rich and if they offer what is above our valuation for Sanchez, we can forget about it.
I don't normally take such a close interest in transfer rumours, but I'm fricken desperate for us to do something early in the window, other than sell, for a change.

I was going to say.....Juve are broke otherwise. If Chelsea make the summer even more delightful for us after signing Costa and Fabregas and go and hand Juve 60 million, is there even any point in pretending Sanchez might come here!?
Not convinced the chavs will offer that for Pogba though, but it will be mildly amusing seeing NQ's love for Pogba turn to hate..... but not so amusing I actually want it to happen.

Something tells me Barcelona won't be hanging on to the words of gossip columns that Juventus may receive for a player in a deal that is likely to be delayed in itself.
Plus Sanchez still has to actually want to go there. I somehow also doubt Juventus would double the offer on what supposedly already has been.

Vermaelen discussing his future with the club at the moment. He's only got 1 year remaining so I doubt we'll get big bucks for him, worth keeping him for his final year and letting him walk? It's almost a guaranteed downgrade because we won't find many better 3rd choice CB's than him, may as well keep him while we can.

Well I can honestly say that I've never seen Bender play, so I have no idea if he's the right man for us or not, or whether he's worth the money being talked about? I reckon we should go back to that crazy idea that someone put out there at the start of the summer, and put a cheeky bid in for Javi Martinez? Because fuck it.
Bender seems to be one of the fashionable names thrown around over here a bit like Isaksson a few years back and a few others here and there.

We won't be back in for Bender, I'm pretty sure of that.
It's true that we don't usually we don't go back in for a player that we initially missed out on (Julio Baptista aside) but I'm hoping with recent developments our transfer policy has changed. I mean we never went over 15 million on a transfer before last year with Ozil.
Jeremy Wilson (who broke it) from the Telegraph is one of those journo's with a close affiliation with the club, alongside Ornstein, Amy Lawrence, Julian Laurents, John Cross etc etc so I don't think it's complete BS.
Bender seems to be one of the fashionable names thrown around over here a bit like Isaksson a few years back and a few others here and there.
I've not seen much of him but some people seem convinced he's the answer to our problems.
Nah Bender is quality. Would have pushed (or at the least seriously challenged) Schweinsteiger and Khedira for a starting berth had he not suffered his thigh injury which speaks volumes about how good he is.
He's really well rounded, got a good engine on him and plays the Busquets/Arteta role well. Didn't have the best of seasons this year but he was hampered by injury (he'll fit right in ). My only slight concern is that I think he may lack some strength and I'm not too sure about his heading ability ......... part of me thinks we need to go for someone who's more of a physical beast ... like a Fernandinho or Matic (obviously not them specifically).
Anyway wouldn't be distraught if we signed him - there's a reason why Leverkusen didn't want to let him go last season, he's quality.
And lol @SSN. Trolls, the lot of them.

I would say it puts us in a much better position up front than what we were last year! Landing Sanchez at that price, doesn't make me think we will go big on another striker and Remy ticks enough boxes to take a punt. Reckon we will be looking at another signing in the DM role, Bender at under 20mil is good business. Our other concern area CB, looks like we want to keep Verm by offering new deal which makes sense. If we cash in then the money needs to be reinvested in a new CB, is Miguel dead?
Sanchez, Remy, Debaucy, Bender....keep Verms, loanee GK, fit again Feo - not bad IMO

Mirror and the Daily Fail reporting we are in talks with Remy.
Sanchez and Remy, would that satisfy our requirements up front?
Sanchez, definitely. Remy I'm still undecided on, but I do think we need a couple of forwards this summer, and I guess we can't expect them both to come in for mega money? He's certainly not a bad player, and I'd take him in a cold minute if it was a choice of him or calling it a day at Sanchez.
Who would play where if went for those two - presumably one would be a CF and one would be a wide forward?
For squad depth I think we need another (at least Giroud level) CF. I'd go for the tactic that won Man Utd title after title and pay slightly over the odds for a good player that is used to the English league.
Bony, Benteke or Remy aren't really any better than Giroud but they offer something different. Benteke though has injury concerns, and it would take around £20-25m to even get Swansea to think about selling Bony. Remy is easily attainable and that's probably who we will go for. I don't mind him but he can have very frustrating games.

Remy would be a decent signing, he's good player with a point to prove. He has more goals in him than Giroud and has that killer instinct you need from your main striker. He's not the worldie we all wanted but it doesn't look like our first choice targets are available this summer anyway. And at the prices going it would also leave spare cash in the kitty to fund quality DM, CB and GK signings.
Even if the reports that Wenger is planning on converting Sanchez to a CF are true (I'm not convinced they are), it would be a risky move so we need some kind of back up. That way we could always move Sanchez back out wide where he's guaranteed to be awesome, and have depth and options upfront.

Sanchez plays up front (well just off the main guy) for Chile and i think he can play there for us too. I think he'll play wide left for us at first and feed off Giroud but the guy is very versatile and can play anywhere upfront. His heading ability is also very good for a tiny guy. I fell in love with him when Chile destroyed Germany a few months ago (although they lost lol) and i remember the BFG saying Sanchez was the toughest striker he came up against.
"You cannot catch him - it's unbelievable how quick and how good with his feet he is," Mertesacker told Arsenal.com. "If you get one against one with him, it's nearly impossible.
"That was a really tough game for everyone today, especially in the first half. It was intense from the first minute and Chile played well over the 90 minutes. I think they are the toughest opponent we have played so far

I wouldn't mind Remy but I always saw him as a wide forward or a second striker rather than someone who can play on his own up front. I could be wrong and perhaps Wenger sees him as capable of adjusting his game to play there.
Good player and can do a job for us covering and providing competition for Giroud for that spot until we develop a complete worldie ourselves or buy one. Debauchy like in that regard. Just hope it doesn't mean that Santi is off to Atheltico.

Remy got some really good goals in the first half of the season last time out and i think he'll be a very good signing. He is the perfect wide attacker for our system and can play on his own as well.

Would there be a better front 5/6 in the premier league/world than that? Or am I getting carried away?
I think with Sanchez and Feo on the wings you will see Giroud and Ozil become world beaters again. If Ramsey carries on from last season then we are truly blessed with one of the best all round midfielders on the planet, absolutely stunning progress from Rambo.
If our bench contains Vermaelen, Arteta, Wilshere, Cazorla, Remy then suddenly we have quality in depth aswell. Is it all coming together under Arsene?

PERHAPS those rumours linking Arsenal with a move for Wayne Rooney weren't true after all... because it seems the Gunners have agreed a deal for a rather more plausible target, Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain, who has reportedly been on Arsene Wenger's radar for some time.
According to the Spanish website Sport.es, the 25-year-old Argentine hitman is on the verge of a £18.5m move to the Emirates, with a five-year deal already in place

I really think we should get Remy on the cheap here. Sanogo needs another couple of years to be at Giroud's level and Remy can do a pretty good job for us.

We've got such a plethora of combinations for midfield/attack but still lack that world class presence in the centre, without that we can still easily be exploited by the better sides. I hope the Lars Bender rumours are true because we should be looking at long term Arteta replacements now.
AFC Leveller
09-07-2014, 04:59 PM
I agree.
We need a diciplined holding midfielder who can organise and win the ball back as well as be able to retain posession under pressure. Against the big sides last season, Arteta was targetted and he gave the ball away many times due to his lack of pace and awareness.
An experienced DCM would top things off nicely (providing we have the other deals in the bag).

All the talk about formations and I dont see Gnabry in any of that. IMO, that kid deserves a proper run-in in the team. He seems like the kind of player who will actually fulfill his potential. He was awesome last season!

There's also Zelalem who according to just about everyone is the real deal. Apparently Wenger is fast tracking him to the first team.
We're a 'we want it now' team. The league cup guys aren't just kids and they certainly won't get 30 league games a season any more. Gnabry did do pretty well but he only got a look in while all our wingers were out. Unless Zelalem can shrug Yaya Toure off the ball and cover 13km a game, he won't get a chance.

I wouldnt loan Gnabry out. I'd give him the CC games, FA Cup games (at least the 'simpler' ones) and also get him game time when we have comfortable leads. Personally, I think we can even bring him on to change a game but I guess if you are not a big name, you wont get that chance.
Oh, and get him game time in the pre-season.

I think the fact we still can't spell his name speaks volumes about his state of affairs at the club, although I always liked the look of him myself.
Remy is a good player, but with a right back to confirm, a CB to sign a keepers and a DM, I can't help but think signing him will be overkill with Sanchez. I am not crazy about him as a CF either.
Wenger already came out and said Gnabry didn't play more because he didn't want to put him under too much pressure when the team was under it. Let's not forget he did pretty well though and is a little unlucky to not be pushing for more game time than he is. I wouldn't be against the loan because, Sanchez, Podolski, Walcott, Chamberlain and Cazorla covering the wide positions is enough.
And to go off on a tangent, Giroud is not as good as Wilfried Bony, though many of us believe he is. Bony is much better in the air, better with the ball at his feet, a better finisher and at least equally as strong.
If we had Benteke or several other prem players they'd have no less goals for us than Giroud imo.

Giroud is starting to stick out like a sore thumb / baboon's arse the more proper quality players we bring in. I suppose we might Bayern our way to the league title, but the difference is, Mandzukic is one of the best forwards in Germany but Giroud is not one of the best forwards in the prem. And even then, Bayern have just gone out and signed the actual best forward in Germany, in Lewandowski whilst Sanogo is our second choice forward.

Last season I hated Giroud as much as the next man, especially towards the end. But the thing you have to realise is that he needs the right players around him to be effective, Arsene couldn't give him this in the 2nd half of the season when he chose to sign Kim Kallstrom and no-one else. Then Feo got injured, Ramsey got injured, Ox got injured. Suddenly, theres no pace and no runners from midfield or out wide. Giroud was fucked. Get Ramsey, Sanchez and Feo on the pitch with him and he is a great striker.
Not ideal but unless we want to spend another 30-40m which we don't then we have to work with him!

I should make it clear that I've never hated him or even disliked him......even when he wasn't playing well. Each player has to be in the team on their own merit. He will improve with the return and acquisition of a player or two but however you look at it he is not a top notch forward. That is what it will nearly always come down to. If we aren't trying to win the league, or CL then fair enough we should make do and he is 'fine' but if we want to win those things we need to start getting real.
What is actually wrong in spending 30-40m on the right CF, whoever he may be? We do have the money and even if we didn't it is still a position a club with our ambitions should be looking to fill. Let's not forget that a CF was our top target only last season. Sanogo and Giroud hasn't somehow turned that on it's head....at least the place the ideas were emanating from.

Using the word ‘great’ rather loosely, don’t you think? He’ll never be that. Adequate, maybe? We shouldn’t be trying to accommodate an average striker during a transfer window. I just don’t think it’s worth the hassle. It’s like fitting the very best, money can buy, Pirelli race tires on a standard Ford Focus. We’ll probably eek a little more out of the performance but never enough to rival the world’s best. Great support but we’d still have a very weak engine. The conversation then flips to ‘how can we get more out of the support’ ala Ozil.
ARightTouch
10-07-2014, 09:51 AM
Well I see your points, Giroud is not the man to be running onto Ozils through balls. Giroud can not win a game on his own. Id agree with that, but my opinion is that we can still win the league with Giroud as our main striker - hes not as bad as everyone makes out. Like I said I was cursing him as much as anyone at the end of last season but on reflection he had zero support from midfield, from the wings, from anywhere. This made him look exceptionally bad and killed his confidence, he needs support to be effective (like most strikers!!) but when he does get this support and confidence I think he can be a great striker. I hope he proves this.
Maybe also, as you pointed out, Giroud needs more than just Sanogo up his arse fighting for a spot. Would Sanogo get anywhere near a City first team or a Chelsea first team? I dont think so, even Demba Ba will be laughing that Sanogo is our 2nd best striker. I don't think Sanchez is a CF, so I think Remy would be a good signing.
We haven't sold anyone this TW how cool is that? Sagna has moved on but its not like hes in his prime, no big loss imo.

That's surprising? Every time I hear of someone like Özil / Benzema / Di Maria etc wanting to leave Madird, they always seem to be on relatively low wages (by the top-clubs' standards, anyway) - did Khedira join them on a free or something, or was he just Jose Mourinho signing?

A lot of why I think Giroud should not be the main man centres around games that happened way before the close of the season. Chances he misses and the lack of dynamism in his game is hard to ignore....even when he is scoring. Much as I like a speed demon, I am actually more willing to overlook that than most, but I think the most salient issue is his conversion rate which is poor imo. For his stature he could be much better in the air too.
To put it another way, there aren't many positions in the team that could be as easily improved upon as at CF. In fact, arguably it would be the easiest position for us to improve despite the money that goes with signing forwards.
Even if Giroud was in the class of Suarez.....which he isn't, but if he was, we would still need better back up for him than Sanogo.

Yes, he's not that prolific in front on goal and his movement needs work, something Arsene has warned him about twice already. He's easy to mark and his hold up play isn't even that good. The flicks he pulls off are 50/50. Read this during the World Cup but also noticed it was a problem last season when looking at his passing stats along with the actual performances. Besides having a loose touch and losing possession, his passing isn't all that great and it's not helping us to keep the opposition pinned back.

FWIW, I really like Khedira as a player, I think he is probably the best CM of his type on the market and would like us to sign him. He would be a major upgrade on Arteta and I think he would be great partner for Ramsey.

I've warmed to the idea of going for Khedira - I still think he wanders a little too far afield at times, and he can look a little heavy-legged and cumbersome (although I should stress that that's just appearance, and not performance), but there's just something infectiously positive about the way he plays? The way he presses and hounds opponents is almost relentless, and everything he does seems to go forward, instead of sideways or backwards. I'm starting to think that a central midfield pairing of him and Ramsey could be a real handful - not sure he's worth 150k a week, but I'm guessing that would be open to negotiation (assuming that figure hasn't just been plucked out of the air, that is)...

After being linked with Arsenal, it now seems that Toulouse right back Serge Aurier may be headed to PSG.
Leading French daily L’Equipe are reporting on Friday that PSG have posted an offer for the 21-year-old Ivory Coast international defender.
Few details have been released about the PSG bid, save that it’s termed only an “initial offer” by L’Equipe.
At the same time, well-informed French journalist Francois Piraux is reporting that the player himself wants to move to the Emirates. Piraux has claimed “Aurier had given his priority to Arsenal because it’s his favorite club”, however , even so, that deal looks to have been shelved.
Arsene Wenger appears to have chosen Newcastle right back Mathieu Debuchy as his favoured choice to replace Bacary Sagna.

He does and it probably gives you flashbacks of Song, but I'd like to think he simply senses when he needn't sit back so much and actually goes to make the difference in the opponents third. Football is about moments and the best modern day players pick the tight time to do the right things.
You'd think a German international would have some sort of sense of when he needs to retreat or fall back, or else it would be pretty amazing clocking up so many games for Real and Germany.
If Sammy boy wants to stay in a top league, he's going to need to bend on those salary demands. He will know it and his agent will. Unless of course he is quite happy to stay put at Real....

Agreed, and to be fair to Khedira, his roaming may just be a simple case of Low telling him to press the opposition high up the pitch, which they can afford to do with guys like Lahm and Schweinsteiger in the same XI - given a different team and different instructions, he may be perfectly happy playing more of a holding role?
In certain situations, his ability to get forward may even be an asset? Wenger showed willing to go 442 for the first time in a long time in the FA Cup final, and couple of players like Sanchez and Khedira could give us the added options we need to really make that formation tick - Sanchez as a second striker, and Khedira as a second box-to-box midfielder alongside Ransey. I wouldn't expect to suddenly become our default formation or anything, but it would me nice to know that we could switch to it with relatively little fuss if and when we need to...

That Hansen docu is a load of bullshit. I've caught 2 minutes of it where he says he's the one that analyses games by telling the team what clips to use. It's complete bollocks. A friend used to work at the BBC and says Dixon is the only one that actually watches the matches in detail and picks out what bits to analyse/expand on. The rest of them have others do it for them who then pass the information on, telling them what to say live on air.

Danny Murphy was too busy what with being menacing outside an off licence and all.
They're having him as some sort of Richie Benaud/Michael Palin figure and they can fuck right off with that. He had his own unique style and influence but the content of what he says is usually skewed and not easy on the ear at all.

I always thought his analysis lacked pace, power and precision. :coffee:
Remember a couple of years back when Walcott scored a hat-trick against Blackburn(?) and Hansen somehow managed to destroy his performance and said Theo had no footballing brain. Imagine you watching MOTD after scoring a league hat-trick and getting slaughtered. Hansen got people talking (as is the case here) but that sort of shit belongs on Talksport not BBC.
Anyway, come on Arsene lets buy all the players.

Not sure it's wrong at all to judge on the basis of a World Cup. That was his stage and he looked ordinary. These silly fees are the result of inflation far outstripping value as joke clubs like PSG and the gypos spend without real world constraint. Without these dopers Cavani would have a realistic fee attached and the fear factor would recede to Fellaini levels. I wouldn't be worried at all if he went to Utd, it would tie up a big chunk of their budget and they wouldn't get anywhere near a decent return on the investment. They are already paying through the nose for that fraud Rooney so they have previous when it comes to wasting huge amounts of cash.

Khedira would be an excellent signing, on top of Sanchez. Debuchy in the bag too, although he isn't exciting but not many right backs are.
we could be getting into nose bleed territory especially if we get another CB. Both sanchez and khedira also allow us to change formation from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 if we want which would be nice.

Our transfer policy was one of the reasons some of us have serious issues with Wumgers arrogance. Has he finally listened to reason & conceeded that he may not always be right? - with the arrival of Sanchez & high hopes of Khedira we have started this pre-season like no other I can remember with signings of quality & more importantly not selling our best players. In my opinion, these 2 come hand in hand - the likes of Kos, Rambo & Ozil who may be on the radar of others can now see we mean business. We didn't show the likes of Fabregas, Nasri & Van Persie that we wanted to compete.
However the Germans have shown once again that the most important ingredient of any footballer is a footballing brain. With a distinct lack of pace in attack they still managed to out score everyone. The game against Brazil showed players that knew when to pull a ball back, when to run beyond the defence, when to move it quickly etc etc - the simple decision making that separates true world class from simply good players. Unfortunately we have had a distinct lack of players with the ability to make the right decisions most of the time. Walcott is a good example, how many times does he make the wrong pass, the wrong run, a poor cross. Wheelchair is another good example. I also worry about Giroud in this sense & need to see more of Sanchez before knowing what he is like. Rambo has come on leaps & has the ability to be this kind of a player, Ozil already is but needs others around him - apart from that we are struggling. Khedira brings another quality brain into the team ( if we get him ) but I would still like to see a proper forward that simply makes the right decisions - someone like Muller would be wonderful, still only 24 & very underrated outside of Germany.

Should have been there ahead of Klose in the German team. Bayern won't be looking to replace Mandzucic with anyone in a hurry as they see Muller as CF material. Apparently its where he wants to play next year. Whether its a CF or attacking from the right he scores more than most & not only makes the right decisions but has the ability to deliver them.

the world cup shows he is clearly not comfortable playing in that position, he likes to drop deep or go wide and lay on chances for others, he is a good goal scorer but certainly not an out and out one.
Sanchez to be fair i think is more of a striker, he can certainly play wide because he has the pace so to do but i feel we will play him through the centre.

He will be next to take the all time World Cup goals record of Klose - think you have to be an out & out goal scorer to do that.
He didn't get the chance in the world cup because of Klose. He has the knack of being in the right place at the right time.
Not sure where Wumger will play Sanchez, a little bit lightweight for a CF role in my opinion but the only plus point if you're right is that Giroud may not be on the pitch.

Happily a translation for Owen's article has now been provided.
"I'm not trying to be funny, but at the end of the day, when all is said and done, and don't quote me on this because I'll pretend I never said it, that Sanchez guy is a fucking wanker for choosing them softie southerners over a good honest proper north west team and I'd just love it if we finish above them, I'd love it! And we lost Suarez too and I'm pissed about that. So now that our good honest proper north west team is a lot weaker and them softie southern poofters a lot stronger, I'd like to logically suggest them poofters will finish way down the table. At least that's what I hope. I'm not professional enough to write a decent football column so what I'll do instead is write a thinly veiled personal prejudice piece, just like a fan who posts to a forum. And it's not abusing my position at all because everyone is doing it. Right good lark this pundit thing.
And now I'm going to explain, with diagrams, why my mate Gerrard is the future of a new a revitalised England team that showed so much promise in the World Cup!"
