Reports of the Club having to take unprecendented steps as a means of coercing fans to renew ST's.....
Like what?
It was pretty stupid of the club to believe that we could go on coming 4th every season without any repercussions, players know we're not that interested in competing now, it's pretty obvious so they're either not interested or if there's no better offer just a stepping stone.
As for the marketing side, big brands want to be associated with success, it's what makes more people buy the products and allows them to show they are the best...if you're not winning and don't at least have top stars people associate with then you're not desirable.
We've screwed ourselves over big time in our hunt for massive profits without success.

Well, if they don't get the deals they seek on the corporate side, don't have the players to sell to make the extra profit, they're gonna have to do something.
Heaven forbid they start concentrating on what makes them money in the first place.....football :faint:
If they don't then they're fucking stupid!

It's catch 22 though, once you get into this kind of cycle it's hard to get out of it, not being a desirable location for players is restrictive, it's much harder to bring in those players who are going to make a difference...throw into that the fact we're not really willing to break the bank and you can see the problem.
We were in a very good position we could have taken advantage of for so long, the bubble is now starting to burst as we've let this drag on for too long, once you fall away it's very hard to get up there and compete unless you spend big money...and without the big marketing money we won't be able to afford to spend big.
It then becomes a question of throwing caution to the wind and taking a risk, which isn't something I can see the board doing.

It is a desirable location for many players. Not the top top earners maybe, but then we've never been able to compete with that anyway. We're not bankrolled by a royal family, a government, a billionnaire, or FIFA. When you strip it down, we're well run business, as we've always been.
What we haven't done, is maximise our potential. We've tried to do everything on the cheap, and with too little care and attention.
We can still attract very good players, and as shown at Utd, a few decent players, a couple of very good players, and a couple of world class players is all you need.
Our wage structure can cope with that easily (see our wage bill vs theirs). We also have the money to buy players.
All that is needed is for the club to come out of it's corporate fat cat den, and show everyone that they're prepared to put football first. One big name signing, and a couple of quality purchases is all that is needed. They won't do it of course....which is what makes them stupid.
Yeah I'm not sure,we're seeing a lot more players shunning us now than before, I think people have woken up and smelt the coffee. If we're competing against other big clubs we've got no chance IMO, which leaves us trying to sign players who aren't so high profile which is probably not what we need.
We need world class players now.

I like this post, but I think the "well run business" is a bit of an overstatement.
This as the bulk of our profit was realised via major asset stripping of our quality players season on season - which is now in return putting us in a disadvantageous setting - and was never realised off actual on field success and proper marketing.
That mask is slowly coming off now, as we really have no top, top talent (by way of early poach and development) to sell now. Neither can we seemingly attract said top, top quality because they want to be somewhere where they are not only paid well, but feel they can add a few accolades to their relatively short careers.
So much for our long term self sustaining model - appears pretty much short lived now, huh? It was a very lazy approach and a way to ensure quick turn around on investments.
Bloody farce.

All we get is one spiel after the other from club voices to justify the madness and placate us fans.
Personally, the most I can do about it is have a moan ever so often when these negative shit that pop up ever so often cut me. Arsenal are monitoring Fernando Muslera ahead of a potential summer move for the Galatasaray goalkeeper.
Wojciech Szczesny's future at the club has been called into question in recent weeks and the player was forced to insist he was happy at Arsenal after his father slammed Arsene Wenger's treatment of him.
Wenger has been linked to many goalkeepers this season, with Pepe Reina and Victor Valdes both said to be on his wanted list.
And now sources in Turkey claim Muslera is potentially on his way to north London. The 26-year-old Uruguay international has been in fine form this season, and last year said he wanted to move to the Premier League.
Muslera said moving to England would be a 'dream' and that could become a reality if Wenger makes his move.
However, Galatasaray president Unal Aysal says he will fight to keep his star goalkeeper.
"Our goal is clear," said Aysal. "Until we win the Champions League it's important we don't sell our best players."
Muslera's contract expires in three years time.

German engineering: Arsenal plan £70m Bundesliga raid for Mario Goetze, Lars Bender and Robert Lewandowski
Arsene Wenger is poised to make a dramatic £70million raid on *Germany this summer.
The Gunners boss has three targets, who play in the Bundesliga, and is willing to shatter club record fees to rebuild his squad.
On the Arsenal shortlist are *Borussia Dortmund pair Robert Lewandowski and Mario Goetze, with Lars Bender, of Bayer Leverkusen.
Striker Lewandowski – valued at £25m – is also wanted by *Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich, but Gunners manager Wenger is keen to land the 24-year-old Poland international.
His team-mate Goetze is rated as one of the most talented young players in Germany. The 20-year-old is already a member of the senior international squad.
And Bender, 24 next month, is another German international Wenger wants. He has been in outstanding form this season with Leverkusen.
The need for new arrivals has been highlighted by the news Abou Diaby’s injury jinx has struck again. He suffered a serious knee *injury in training and could be out until next year.
Chief scout Steve Rowley and his team have been scouring the German league in recent months.
But Wenger is also *considering a move for £8.5m-rated Olympique Lyons midfielder Maxime Gonalans, 24.

Arsenal make first move to re-sign Barcelona ace
Premier League side Arsenal have taken the first steps to re-signing Alex Song, who left the Emirates last summer for Barcelona.
The Cameroonian midfielder has struggled to force his way into the starting eleven at Barca and has played second fiddle to the likes of Sergio Busquets and Thiago Alcantara, alongside Xavi and Andres Iniesta in midfield.
The 25-year-old, who left Arsenal for £15m is now very much considered for a summer exit and Inside Spanish Football understands that representatives from the North London club have made first contact with the Catalan club.
The Catalans would seemingly be willing to allow Song to leave this summer and it is thought that a fee of just around £12m would be enough for Arsene Wenger to re-sign the defensive midfielder.
Song made his feelings of emotion for Arsenal known before he left for Barca, saying:
“I had been trying for eight months to start talking about a new long-term deal but the club kept postponing me all the time, saying “You have three years left.
“I hadn’t talked about money – I just wanted to sit down and discuss a new deal. I wanted to commit my career to the club I loved.”
French Ligue 1 side Paris Saint Germain have also shown interest but it is likely Song would choose a return to Arsenal.

I would say that a lot of that energy is coming from the pro-Barcu#t hacks who obviois realise they were duped. . .what kind of deal are we talking about if it were true, he should not be allowed to come back for any more than he left, IAH it should be less. . .and do we need him, we need a proper DM who can anchor things not go AWOL when he seems fit

Tottenham and Arsenal could renew their interest in Adrian Lopez amid reports Atletico Madrid are ready to cash in on the Spanish striker.
Adrian, 25, enjoyed a breakthrough season last term as he netted 19 times in all competitions, including 11 strikes in Atletico's triumphant Europa League campaign.
However, the forward has disappointed this time around - he's managed just four goals this season - and the capital club are preparing to sell him in the summer.
Spurs and Arsenal, who are both on the look-out for new strikers, are leading the chase for the Spain international, although Liverpool and Everton hold an interest in him too.

BACARY SAGNA will be a summer target for Paris Saint-Germain — and Arsenal are already eyeing his replacement.
The French full-back has had an injury-hit season and returned after a four-game absence in Saturday’s 4-1 home win over Reading.
Talks over a contract extension — he has 12 months left after this season — have stalled, with Gunners offering similar terms to his current £60,000 a week.
PSG will bid around £8million for Sagna, 30, and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has £5m Sochaux right-back Sebastien Corchia, 22, at the top of his wanted list.

The goal against Blackburn, liverpool,Manchester United away, Barcelona were his best moments. His arrival got us the 4th place trophy in the season he arrived aswell

That might be true, but often he looked unfit, isn't it the clubs job to make sure players get fit.....if not through their own will then through extra training if need be?
I also think the manager doesn't seem to get the best out of him by making him feel wanted, some players need a manager who pushes them.
55 of his 97 starts end up with him being substituted, not to mention him being played out of position all the time, we could have handled it better.
He might just be a lazy f*cker of course, but we just seem to have accepted that without really trying to change anything.

Wenger missed a trick with Arshavin. It's only just now he's getting the best out of Rosicky after years of playing him out wide. In a recent interview he said Rosicky was being played too far away from goal. Bravo Wenger! How many years did it take for you to figure it out.
Arashavin arrived in his late 20s and isn't used to tracking back. He doesn't have the fitness for it. Why not give him games as a second striker or an attacking midfield instead of forcing the issue and being so damn stubborn?

I think its been a 2 way street. There is clearly something fundamentally flawed in Arshavin's psyche, and it doesn't surprise me at all to hear that he may retire from football altogether. Perhaps, but we didn't even try to get him fitter it seems, look at the stats about the number of games he's played and how many times he's been substituted. Some players are better at getting the best out of players like him.....I personally think we played him in the wrong position and this didn't help his moral, he's clearly quite fragile confidence wise and has never recaptured form after his initial burst. Was pretty decent in the Euros though and not bad for Zenit.
Giving a player bit part games is never going to improve his form.

Arsenal & Manchester City in race to sign Dortmund star Gotze
The 20-year-old Germany international, who has a €40 million release clause, continues to be monitored by the Premier League duo this season
Arsenal and Manchester City are both monitoring Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Gotze ahead of prospective bids at the end of the season.
Txiki Begiristain, appointed as City's director of football last October, has watched Dortmund play several times this season with the intention of tracking Mats Hummels, Neven Subotic and the highly-rated Gotze.
Goal.com exclusively revealed in March that Manchester United have pulled out of the running for Gotze, despite the 20-year-old publicly revealing his desire to one day play for Sir Alex Ferguson's side.
Reports in Germany claim Begiristain flew out to Dortmund to watch the German club's fixture against Shakhtar Donetsk in March and had a conversation with Gotze's agent, Volker Struth, regarding a potential deal.
Roberto Mancini is already targeting several big-name signings ahead of the summer transfer window after seeing his side fall 12 points behind Manchester United in the title race this season.
Gotze also remains on Arsenal's radar and although Arsene Wenger's side would be reluctant to meet the Germany international's €40 million release clause but a bid of around £25m would be considered by the Premier League club.
Arsenal failed with a bid for Gotze in 2011, while the player's agent stated that the midfielder would remain with Dortmund for a further two years before considering a move elsewhere.

Arsenal make enquiry over €5m-rated Corchia
The Gunners recently asked about the availability of the promising 22-year-old right-back, who they see as a replacement for outgoing France international Bacary Sagna
Arsenal have made an enquiry about Sochaux right-back Sebastien Corchia, Goal.com has learned.
The Gunners were told by the Ligue 1 strugglers that they will have to stump up €5 million for the 22-year-old.
Arsene Wenger has targeted Corchia as he steps up his plans to replace Bacary Sagna, who is set to leave Emirates Stadium at the end of the season.
Wenger's main targets are understood to be Corchia - who has represented France at Under-21, U-19, U-18 and U-17 level - and Swansea's Angel Rangel.
The Arsenal manager wants a right-back who can fit in with the Gunners' playing style and challenge Carl Jenkinson for the first-team slot.
Corchia has moved to the top of the Londoners’ wanted list after impressing their scouts with his performances in a team fighting relegation.
He is at the other end of the experience scale to Rangel but has a burgeoning reputation in France. He has started more games for the 16th-placed Ligue 1 club than any other player this season and is regarded in his homeland as a future fixture of the national team.
As reported by Goal.com, Sagna is at loggerheads with Arsenal following the collapse of his contract negotiations and has told team-mates that he expects to leave at the end of the season.
Paris Saint-Germain are the favourites to sign Sagna, who is valued at the €9-11m mark by the Gunners and whose current deal expires in 2014.
Wenger wants high-calibre competition for Jenkinson, who has made huge strides this season but is not believed to be ready to play week-in, week-out for the first team.
Rangel, who has been a key figure in Swansea's rise to prominence, is regarded as a strong alternative to Corchia. At 30, the Spaniard is the same age as Sagna and would be a like-for-like replacement for the Frenchman in terms of seniority and experience.
Rangel recently signed a two-year contract extension that ties him to Swansea until 2016, but he remains on Arsenal's radar and the agreement will not stop Wenger from making a move if he decides the Spaniard is the right man.
So our options if Sagna leaves is a nobody or a grandad?
Rather keep Sagna.

Spain captain Iker Casillas has told friends that he is open to a switch to the Premier League, according to Spanish newspaper AS.
The Real Madrid goalkeeper has endured a difficult time this season - injuries and an increasingly fractious relationship with manager Jose Mourinho have restricted him to just 18 league starts.
News of Casillas' situation at the Bernabeu has alerted clubs across Europe, with Arsenal and Liverpool reported to be keen on bringing the 31-year-old to England.
And according to AS, Casillas has informed close friends that he regards England as a "possible destination" if he decides to leave Madrid.
The same report also says the goalkeeper was touched by Arsene Wenger's public endorsement of his Ballon d'Or credentials last year - and this could boost Arsenal in their bid to land the 2010 World Cup winner.

The massive pay rise probably had something to do with it. Apparently he was only on about £30-40k.... not anymore he isn't.
There might well be some sort of release clause in there, no idea. If there is then I hope it's similarly massive.
I wouldn't be surprised if he gave it 1 more season with us and called it a day if we don't qualify for the CL, which lets face it is fairly unlikely.

Arsenal and Manchester City are keeping tabs on Stephan El Shaarawy’s situation at AC Milan, according to reports in Italy.
The promising striker has been in miserable form since the January arrival of Mario Balotelli and has only added two goals to the 14 he had hit before.
It was only two months ago that El-Shaarawy signed an extension on his contract, which now runs until 2018, but he appears to have grown unhappy at the San Siro, where he arrived in 2011, and could be on his way in the summer.
And his situation took a turn for the worst on Saturday when he was dropped from the starting line-up for the huge Serie A clash with second-place Napoli.
Reports in Italy have suggested that the 20-year-old has confided in friends that he is finding the current situation difficult which has further intensified speculation surrounding his future.
Napoli themselves are interested in El-Shaarawy and may turn to him should they sell the in-demand Edinson Cavani this summer but there is also interest in England, it has been claimed.
Arsene Wenger is expected to strengthen his forward line this summer, with the side still struggling to cope with the loss of Robin van Persie.
City, meanwhile, are expected to spend big after falling back behind Manchester United at the top of the Premier League.
Roberto Mancini is yet to buy a replacement for Balotelli while the future of Edin Dzeko is also unclear.

Not a Ches hater but the argument that his complacency is fuelled by a lack of competition is well founded so this guy is welcome because as well as Fabs seems to be handling himself of late, I doubt many think he is the answer.

I'd prefer Begovic but I do like Mignolet a lot. He's realistically our best bet in terms of availability and price. I think Begovic is the superior keeper though.
It now appears that the 25 year old midfielder is keen to make a return to North London. The player’s cousin, a fellow former Cameroonian international Rigobert Song, stated that Alex is keen to join up once more with Arsene Wenger’s men.
“Barcelona put so much effort into signing him last summer, and Alex turned down many great teams in order to sign with them’, said Rigobert Song.
“But this season he has only been a substitute. He is not happy.
“At Arsenal he was a leader on and off the field – he doesn’t feel like this in Spain and it makes him feel bad.”
well he saw yaya toure marginalised in barcas internal "catalan only" genocide. did song think he was better than people like yaya toure or even busquets leg up or no leg up? deluded. do not want. but tbf he does have better stats than someone like jack wilshere so im not saying he wouldnt improve the team.

the line 'he turned down many great clubs' says it all. he wanted out, wherever he could, so he can stay out.
Nah, it's time to bring him back. We were banking on PFA young player of the year, Arsenal player of the season at age 18, to rack up some sexy fantasy football points after 15 months out injured (more than Ramsey who is only now starting to become awesome, and Eduardo) but he has simply failed. Time to sell him to Man Utd for £30m (because Fergie is stupid and would happily pay that much) and sign another spider. Fucking love those spiders. Which way's he going to go? Oooh it's just too much. Here, at the Chinnasammy, on a Saturday afternoon. And the crowd are loving it. Here, on the weekend.

Played all season for a relegated threatened club, the kind of thing that will ultimately destroy the confidence of any decent keeper....felt Szczesny has looked solid on his return from being dropped....we definitely need a solid backup to keep his ego in check though.
As for Steve Bould i hope he doesn't go.....i think he is the only man who can get through Wenger's impermeable stubbornness and i think he is responsible when our defence looks sturdy and solid. Although if he wants to build up a career for himself away from us than i wish him well...will always have a lot of time for Bould!
