given Gustavo is a DM, not noticing him surely is a good thing in a team that won the competition ?
this. could mean he was quietly doing his job starting attacks ala Gilberto - Gilberto  awlsome player IMO
he might not have stood out, but you want bernard because he was brazilian so therefore must be skilful and you admitted not having seen him. this transfer is just the same, different player. you should be happy :)
The reason I wanted Bernard is because I always wanted to see a skillful Brazilian at Arsenal (we almost signed Juninho once upon a time, would have been so exciting), that's what I associated Brazilian football with.
Don't think Gustavo is in that mould so I'm really not too bothered.

your arguments for a skillful brazilian really make no sense. you hadnt seen the player yet are annoyed we didnt sign him. Gervinho was a highly rated skilful player, it didnt work out.
last year you moaned taht you would rather watch world class players, then we start to go after a world class player and you dont want him, you want to watch a skilful brazilian instead. and you moan wenger hasnt a clue? you change your mind the whole time

Don't know too much about Gustavo, all I can say is if he played in the Confederations cup I didn't even notice him which can't be a great thing can it?
Wouldn't be my 1st choice signing but beggars can't be choosers I guess, probably won't happen anyway.
If this guy cost 17 million though would rather we'd put that towards Bernard.

Gervinho was sh*t I said so before we signed him, plus he's not Brazilian.
I want quality players, not convinced Gustavo is that, don't know much about him to be fair as I've said, hence the reason he wouldn't be my choice, I'd choose someone I know is quality.

Wenger has lost it, 8 years ago!!! He's suppose to be one of the best players in Brazil, that's good enough for me, skillful Brazilians rarely disappoint.

F*cks sake it's like talking to a 6 year old sometimes, you just make up sh*t that is blatantly not true.
Suarez is a pr*ck a troublemaker and a mercenary, so yes I don't want this scumbag anywhere near the club, he's not worth paying 40-50 million for as he's not that special and is way too much trouble, moreover we need several players not one total muppet.

25 million or 21. its still 20 odd million on a player who is totally unproven and your reasons for signing him are totally flawed. by your own admission you hadnt see him before yet keep harping on about how great he is. and you claim we dont scout players, you dont either, just go off the press. something you jsut accused me of doing

Like I said one of the best players in Brazil, very highly rated, I'd take the risk these players rarely fail to deliver.

Has anyone notcied the SSN side bar on summer transfers when it comes to Arsenal! It's so depressing buy yet laughable, when you see the amount of players who have left the club, then you see 1 signing on a free. Whilist AW is playing poker with Liverpool, the first game of the season is only round the corner. What makes him seriously think this team will be fighting for the title? They are at best a top 4/5 side, even the spudz are making some really good signings. Why waste most of the money on a player who is banned for the best part of August & September, who is volatile and can lose it anytime. Why not get those highly paid lazy arse scouts looking for players. What has happened to our once great scouting network? FFS what is going on, some much money in the bank, probably more than the bank of england, yet all we have to show is a free agent under 21 players. This **** wenger takes the piss out of the fans. If I was at the ground on members day I would have spat right in his face from my disgust.

A change may do him good, as a great woman once said. But alternatively a few months of bad form/disinterest would turn him into a genuine fat fuck. Not just the jokey Arshavin type. And there would be no coming back from that.
Shrek is far more of a risk than evil Suarez would be. When Suarez is playing, you're guaranteed mostly good performances and he's always fit. If there was a chance to have a consistently motivated Shrek, I'd probably choose him though.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to disqualify players who don't honour contracts from the national team for the duration of the contract. Then everyone would be on their case big time.

09:25 BST: Tottenham's summer spending is set to go over the £50m mark with the expected signing of Toulouse's Etienne Capoue but the North London club are not stopping there. The Mirror say Franco Baldini has contacted his counterpart in Roma, Walter Sabatini, about a £15m move for midfielder Miralem Pjanic.
09:17 BST: Arsene Wenger has said he will respect Liverpool's stance on the transfer of Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan has been touted for a move to Arsenal all summer but the Gunners boss says he must accept Liverpool do not want to sell. He told the Metro, "We know what we want to do. The player, if I look at the statements, (does) as well. Liverpool at the moment do not agree. If they change their minds or not, I don’t know. We’ll respect that."
09:10 BST: Free-spending Monaco have made a €17m bid for Atletico Madrid winger Arda Turan according to Spanish outlet Cuatro. He has been a target of Premier League sides Arsenal and Liverpool but it seems the Ligue 1 club are favourites for his signature.

A couple of years back they had no money to spend on transfers and now they can all of sudden cash out 50mil+ on transfers and big wages for their players... They remind me abit about Newcastle, really close to CL footie and thinking they should just spend 50mil on unproven players for next season... Didnt really work out for them :p

Is £14m cheap for a Bayern squad player? Ok Bayern are bloody good so maybe it is. Gustavo is a step up from Arteta but let's not get too carried away. He's decent.
Marc Overmars
10-08-2013, 05:16 PM
Yeah he's not a cheap option in the slightest. Just because he's not first choice anymore doesn't make him any less of a player, I mean, their midfield is absurd. He was an important player for Bayern the other year and they missed him in the final against Chelsea.
14m is good business to pick up a player from the most talented squad in Europe. We could pay twice that for a player of the same quality but more high profile.

:rose:
At the minute a number of websites, led by the Metro, are claiming that Arsenal have agreed a fee with Bayern Munich for midfielder Luiz Gustavo and while Id love nothing more than this to be true it seems as if this is all based on a rumour which started on the internet and has no foundation in reality.
Yesterday some random person posted on an internet board that Gustavos agent had been on a radio station in Austria claiming that the deal was agreed for the exact same amount that the Metro are now quoting £14m. This seems to be ground zero for the rumour but it was quickly copied and pasted and made to look all reputable and re-tweeted like crazy.
From there it spread like wildfire. Everyone and anyone was tweeting it as if it was their own bit of information, some even adding that theyd just heard the interview for themselves despite the fact it was supposed to have been on Austrian radio the day before, but one thing was missing from every single tweet not one of the people named the radio station this world exclusive had been heard on.
Not one.
A check of the media in England, Austria and Germany shows that none of the outlets there have heard this interview either well, none except the Metro and we all know that not only do they not need a credible source to run a story, they are also quite happy to make up their own quotes [they did so with Higuain].
The person who wrote the Metro piece about Gustavo agreeing a fee didnt even put their name to it. Wouldnt you want yours on the piece which breaks the news of the first money Arsenal had spent in this transfer window?
Im afraid to say that given the timing and content of the Metros article, despite the fact that theyve left out the reported quotes, the information they are reporting is so close to the stuff which was doing the rounds on Twitter that Im pretty certain thats what they based their whole piece on.
I could, of course, always be wrong, and Arsenal have agreed a fee for Gustavo. Anything is possible eh, even the Metro getting a story right.

Wasn't what we needed tbh, he's an average player and far too limited. However, the way he was dropped unceremoniously for RVP was very unfair. We should have stuck with him for the 2nd half of the 10-11 season. We wouldn't have won a trophy but neither did we do so with RVP in the team, so it wouldn't have made a difference in terms of our final league finish.

Yeah I remember that !
He had a medical at another club, went AWOL from it, and signed for us.
Signed just before we went on our first tour of the far east.
Yep, he was definitely signed for his ability.

Exactly. It was nothing more than to cash in our far east popularity.

Wenger is hardly the sort of manager who would simply accept the board imposing a player on him without his consent. He likes to be in control, and something like this would probably be a resigning issue for him.

Never let the evidence get in the way. Do you think Wenger wants the team running around Vietnam? Your ongoing theory of a Wenger dictatorship absolutely sucks.

And you can't even say that Park failed at Arsenal. He never even played.

In the past, he actually cared about the team over the money.
Not so anymore

Does look like we are getting Gustavo......but the more chatter there is, I don't reckon Suarez is coming well not before the start of the season and more than likely ever if we take the Liverpool stance for face value. I really cant see us doing anything but the right way after getting caught with our pants down with the one pound over 4mil bid.....
With that in mind wouldn't we be better advised to start looking elsewhere? at something cheaper? Rooney perhaps? even go in seriously for Felliani, we may not be able to get the ultimate striker anymore but we could strengthen other areas. I still think Fatboy could work playing behind one up top and Felliani would make our midfield better fullstop.
We need players, Wenger has said we are short and we must address that and not with dross/panic buys......Suarez will take up all we have apparently got to spend......
Higuain, Cescar, Jovetic, Suarez, Bernard etc etc were all suppose to be done deals, none have happened, so who knows about Gustavo, there's been so much BS flying around noone knows if this is gonna happen.
Would personally prefer if we went in for Fellaini, he's a monster of a player.
Cripps_orig

We did go for Fellaini.
We met his release clause but offered him the same wage he's on at Everton.

The gustavo deal is actually believable because whe know he is available and has a fair price. The only question is if he would go to Arsenal

Depends.
If he wants football and 4 place trophys then we are the place to come,
If he wants not so much football but real trophies, we arent

I'd say Gustavo would join us:
I love their [Arsenal’s] style of play and I have been watching them for some time now.
However, like yourself, I do not know what is happening on the other side at this moment.

However, like yourself, I do not know what is happening on the other side at this moment."

I am going to counter my own arguement a bit......say we went in for a higher bid/I mean Wenger still is still showing an interest in the guy.....arent things panning out very much how they did when the sharks were after our best, first denials but ultimately a transfer happens?
we have been dicked a few times now, maybe the shoe is on the other foot.....just got to sit it out?
