Nah... Wenger is keeping him to kill him, the guy is not even allowed to show up for training, he's only allowed to show up at the training facilities when all other first team players have left. Walcott is probably gonna be the 2. choise striker, especially after we now got the 2 best "through-passers" (not sure how u say it in english) in the league.

I really don't understand why we didn't get a striker in???
We still had money and there were still some options for the right price
As said when linked with Cesc, I don’t think we’d need a striker if we have someone like that pulling the strings behind the front line. Wenger will give Giroud his chance to shine and I hope he repays him. If it all goes tits up we have the January window. With Ozil in the team, I’m hoping we get more out of the rest of the team. I’m a little worried by the lack of cover on the flanks but we’ll have to wait and see what happens. Flamini is a good addition as well. Was really pleased with his Spurs performance and he’s not even match fit yet.

Bif is improving a lot but there's always a nagging concern when you only have one reliable option up front. Theo doesn't hold up the ball or win headers, so the dynamic of the attack changes when he's played up top. He's still got it all to prove there.
At the moment I think we're in a similar situation to 11/12 with RVC as the only option, although granted we have a stronger midfield this time which I'm hoping compensates.

I do quite like Giroud, did last season too.
However...I do feel that him not having pace is a big obstacle in his development, I think technically he can still improve and has improved a lot since last season. I think the best we can hope for with him is Ade type stats when Ade had that Breakthrough season with us.
If Giroud is capable of that type of return for a couple of seasons then that would be great.
IMHO He will never be a Grade A striker like say Saurez or RVC, but Giroud can and most likely will be very useful for us.
Carlton Cole is available :violin:

Ben Smith, BBC Sport
MAN UTD MISS OUT ON COENTRAO
"Just had confirmation that Manchester United's attempts to pull off an 11th hour loan move for Real Madrid's Fabio Coentrao did indeed fail.
"The first part of the paperwork was submitted to the Premier League before the 2300 BST deadline. That one page document contained a rough outline of the deal, the signature of the player and was signed off by both clubs.
"That then gave all parties an extra hour to complete the finer points of the deal. But no further attempt was made to push on with the deal and it is understood that Real Madrid backed away from the process when their attempt to recruit a replacement left back, Guilherme Siqueira from Granada, fell through because he in turn had been loaned out to Benfica."

There's nothing wrong with Giroud.
Unfortunately, expecting him to play every game of the season is retarded. Even at the end of the NLD he was holding his hamstrings and looked like he was about to roll over. Unless we prioritise cups (which is something we should never do imo) we're fucked.

Even Wenger admitted his movement was better compared to last season where he hardly moved.

Great goal on Sunday by him, but we're definitely over reliant on him until Podolski is fit.

Wenger will give Sanogo games and it's within Bendy's interest to play for this club. With good service, it's not beyond any of these strikers to score goals for us. We also have Theo as well.

I don't really see goals as a problem individually. Giroud - or anyone - could score 25 goals, but it still might not impress me. What's important is the overall number of goals the team scores. Already we're looking to move the ball a bit quicker now. A bit more energy in midfield with Flamini back and Ramsey playing well. And Ozil is pretty much the ultimate player to have for a counter-attacking team. But when you move the ball forward quickly from midfield to attack, you don't want it to halt to a stop with Giroud. You need players who can quickly make a pass and move. He did well not only with his goal but in his general creativity against Tottenham.
Remains to be seen whether he can keep that up. Doubts also remain about whether Walcott would consistently control the ball well enough and pick the right options. But I'd go for pace up front right now. I'd take 20 goals from the striker if it allows for good build-ups and Cazorla getting 10 more, rather than a limited selfish striker who will get 25 for himself by the work of Cazorla/Ozil but limit chances for others.

Worried about Walcott making the right decisions?
HO HO HO HO
I'm worried about when we have to rest Walcott or when he gets injured. People are expecting him to play two positions without the expectation he won't be out for a month or too... Think about how our game plan works without Walcott or AOC...
Take him off and the opposition full backs practically sit on the edge of our box and we don't even get out of our half to be in the position for us to worry about theo walcott's decision making. It's like we've become blind to how much we've relied on him.

You get far too touchy when anything remotely negative is said about Walcott. I think he's a crucial player and one of the first names on the team sheet. This is not about whether to play Walcott at all - of course he plays. But it's whether he plays up front or on the right. Doing what he's doing now is different to playing more with his back towards goal and having more decisions to make when when you have 2 sets of runners both left and right. As I said, I would still try him up front but doubts obviously remain.

I have doubts about whether walcott can play as CF, but the point of the post wasn't to defend walcott, it was to describe just how ridiculous our current situation is. By the time Giroud needs resting or gets injured, Walcott will probably need resting or will get injured, there's no real way we can rotate and tactically adjust in the way you describe, it'll happen out of crisis instead of choice because we've got fuck all options.

03-09-2013, 01:36 PM
The problem with playing Theo upfront is that we have nobody to replace him on the wing. It's such bad luck to lose both Podolski and the Ox to long term injuries at the same time. We'll have to wait and see if Sanogo, Gnabry and Miyaichi can make the step up this season.
Niall_Quinn
03-09-2013, 01:37 PM
It's time for Walcott to step up now, isn't it? Wenger's hand will be forced here anyway. If he had been desperate for a striker he would have paid the £3mill for Ba and not fucked around. He must already view Walcott as a viable alternative, given that Podolski is out until the January window anyway. If Giroud gets injured Walcott will play up top. Can't actually see Wenger delivering on his nasty threat to use Bendtner.

Dennis Bendtner is back.
It's no secret that Arsenal and myself had agreed that I could leave the club during the 2013 summer transfer window subject to an agreement between all parties.
An agreement had been reached with more than one club this week but as Arsenal were unable to secure the services of another striker, they reserved their right to not sanction any deal to be concluded...
Naturally, I was very disappointed as I was looking forward to a new challenge, with a new club and a fresh start in English football.
Many things have been said about my where my future lies after many years at Arsenal; the truth is I just want to play football which is when I'm happiest and Arsenal is a fantsstic environment for any professional to apply their trade. I still feel very strongly about Arsenal Football Club and following positive talks with the Manager, I am looking forward to working hard to regain full fitness and doing my very best to help to the team and the Manager fulfil our objectives and ambitions this season.
I've learnt a lot from my loan experiences at Sunderland and Juventus and I want to assure all Arsenal fans that I will give everything I have to contribute to what I believe will be a successful season for the club.

^ Who ??
According to El Confidencial, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was keen to make his mark at Real Madrid on transfer deadline day just as Gareth Bale was being introduced to the Bernabeu.
Levy called Florentino Perez on Monday in an attempt to stop Mesut Ozil’s transfer to Arsenal, Spurs’ great north London rivals.
Jose Felix Diaz writes in El Confidencial that Levy felt betrayed by Real Madrid after lengthy negotiations over Bale and a partnership agreement between Spurs and the Spanish giants that was agreed when Luka Modric left White Hart Lane.
El Confidencial add that Levy and Spurs had enquired about Ozil in July and August during the discussions over Bale but at that point in time it was thought the German playmaker would remain at Real Madrid.
Los Blancos president Florentino Perez politely informed Levy that the deal to sell Ozil to Arsenal was all but done.

There is no 'general price' in football. I thought Real reached a level of stupidity in 2009 that couldn't be topped but I was wrong. No point in making comparisons of what Ronaldo was worth 4 years ago and thinking his value would have gone up over the years. This isn't a market. A striker would have made it ideal , an injury to Giroud right now would be terrible as we'd have to rely on Sanogo/cunt Bendtner but overall it was fairly relieving at the end.
Özil is a world-class player, who I'd never had of thought would join us.
Flamini is a great back up player to have, and his performance against the Spuds showed he can still do a good job. He's a leader , orders players around him, and stays back and defends non-stop. We've missed a player of his stature ever since he left, and now he's back , its like he never left.
Viviano, nearly 30 and an experienced back up , a loan deal so if he's good we can sign him up. Not much else to it really.
The board though, needs a complete overhaul of their transfer policies, be like City and sign all of our players before August.

Probably needed 1 or 2 more in terms of depth but I'm satisfied for now at least, which is mainly down to signing Özil.
Sanogo is a punt, we'll see if he's any good or not.
Flamini was underwhelming and a classic bargain bin pick up, but he's a scrote and certainly adds some beef to the midfield.
Viviano hopefully gives Chesney the drive to keep on improving.
Özil is little bit special and hopefully represents a watershed moment for us in the transfer market.

People confuse 8 years of not winning with the whole period being monotonous. I believe in the early years, there were genuine constraints on Wenger - right when an unprecedented amount of money was being spunked by some clubs.
However, I think he got in a comfort zone and there was a general level of contentment amongst him and our hierarchy to finish top 4 and pocket CL money and this continued through to the past 3-4 years where a shift in strategy was possible. Also, where Wenger and the Club went wrong - is they banked on this stratgy producing future great players and rewarded them appropriately before this 'greatness' was achieved. The result being that under the strategy employed, those who did go on to realise their talent were actually underrewarded while the likes of Bendtner were grossly over rewarded. Consequently, this strategy resulted in us losing pretty much all our best players season after season after season. So perversely, we wasted an awful lot of money while being perceived as being cheap.
This strategy seems to have been consigned to the dust bin. Even in the early days of our awful transfer window - we saw this strategy shift. A lot of effort clearly went into getting rid of those who were over rewarded while delivering little. And now we have potentially had a 'Bergkamp moment' with the signing of Ozil. For the first time in a long time, there is a sense of hope.
Getting that first big signing in - was always going to be tough - cue the reaction of general surprise and hilarity when we pursued Suarez. People, not least ourselves as Arsenal fans did not see us as being serious. If we felt that - imagine what top players thought. Now that we have signed Ozil, surely that perception has to have changed - this should manifest itself in future transfer windows.
We wanted a change in approach/stratgy, we've got it. The least we can do now is get behind it and give the people employing that strategy a chance to deliver on it.
And that includes Wenger.

I meant more in terms of the way we play, formation, tactics and piss poor substitutions that we were used to seeing every week for 8 years rather than financially.
But yes, we'll give them a chance, but surely that's what I said above?
Lets see what they do this season before we start handing out a new contract to wenger.

I agree lets wait for the contract, but with your point about piss poor tactics etc, I think that's harsh. Yes wenger used to be bad at it, focus on ourselves not opposition etc. but you don't pick up the most points in 2013 if you don't do tactics etc. I think wenger has changed recently, our side is tough to beat. Since spurs game in march. We have lost once. Villa at home.

Happy to see how the next few months pan out because Özil certainly injects the team with super quality, however the doubts still remain and won't go away until we actually do something on the pitch to allay them.
I'm not going to believe we can do anything more than 3rd/4th until, well, we actually do.
Seen enough false dawns at this club to last a lifetime.

Mostly agree with that. With limited funds we picked the wrong strategy and it has cost us dearly. The wage structure rewarded the wrong players and made it very difficult for us to hold on to real talent in the squad. Even with limited funds, I can't understand why we'd spread the cost of £30m-£50m on group of average players instead of spending a good bulk on one or two first team ready world class players. That's essentially what we've done this window. We've only spent £40m on a player. We spent more on players in the last two windows.
The squad will need time and I hope we've really turned a corner but I'm still unsure of Wenger. Very hesitant to say he should get a new contract right now. I'm waiting to see what the squad looks like in January and what we'll do if we need more additions to the squad. Also, I want to see a challenge for the title this year. If it gets to December and we're already out of the race and struggling, I think that's enough. If we can't make use of a player like Ozil than there is nothing left he can really offer. I hope it doesn't come down to that and it shouldn't because he should have the skills to really push us forward with this team.

I really dont see why the euphoria over us getting a world class player...at last should translate into Wenger getting a new contract. We have been here before, with Arshavin. Wenger is the weak link in all our teams, always has been. To be able to win the big prizes you need top players AND a top manager too. Wenger has conistently failed at every major obstacle put in front of him. If he stays,,soon enough the top players will leave us in frustration. You need at least 6 great players to make upfor Arsenes tactical deficits. Right now we have 2.

I think Wenegr was always going to be offered a new contract. The media are just hyping it up because of the Ozil deal.
I'm also seeing alot of outlets are saying we are closing in to sign that Romanian dude and that Spuds are looking at him too. He scored against Hungary the other night. Is he worth a punt?

It is universally agreed that we need a striker even if it is with cover at the foremost in our mind! hence the serious move for Ba......dont know anything about this guy but it may be worth it as long as we are not looking at another NB......who the more I think about it has burned far too many bridges surely??

He's a decent player. Nothing special but better than Bendtner and Sanogo, plus we can sign him out of the transfer window so he would be a good short term back-up until January.

He's scored 44 league goals in 12 years. That's less than 4 a season.
In all comps he's scored 68 over 12 years. That's less than 6 a season.
No thanks.
Schalke are about as good as we are right now. If they're happy to release him, he probably isn't good enough for us.

was he released from schalke or did he do a flamini and refuse to sign on?

He was released, too good apparently. Schalke know their place in the footballing hierarchy.
Has 22 goals in 63 games for Romania, not too bad I guess.

Sagna has played CB more often than RB this season so far. Which is just as well, because he's old, a the best in the air and a the worst crosser - characteristics that are great for CB's and terrible for fullbacks.

He isn't a 16 year old from the swiss 4th division, he's been playing in the Bundesliga for years and has tons of caps with Romania. He was rated when he first broke through but fell off the radar.

You forgot to mention he made 223 league appearances in those 12 years (with a lot of those appearances off the bench). Putting him on a par with Bendtner as a 1 in 5 striker, except Marica also knows how to control a football. As I said, nothing special but he could tide us over until the January window.
